Google announced two separate Android updates on July 9, 2025: Gemini began rolling out to compatible Wear OS watches, while Circle to Search gained a follow-up path into AI Mode. Gemini targets the smartwatch experience; AI Mode and the new gaming tools target Android phones and tablets, not Wear OS watches.
The Wear OS rollout covers selected Pixel, Samsung, OPPO, OnePlus, and Xiaomi watches running Wear OS 4 or newer. Google described the release as beginning immediately and continuing over the following weeks, so compatibility still depends on the exact model, software version, country, account, language, paired phone, and app updates.

Gemini comes to compatible Wear OS watches
Google is positioning Gemini as the next stage of its move away from Google Assistant, but this announcement does not mean Assistant disappeared universally from every smartwatch on the same day. Gemini was announced for compatible Wear OS watches, with a staged rollout rather than a guaranteed simultaneous release.

Google also says the watch must be connected to a compatible device. In practice, users should not treat this as a completely independent Gemini computer on the wrist. Some integrations and permissions are configured through the Gemini app on the paired phone.
Google’s Wear OS announcement notes separately that watches upgrading to Wear OS 6 would continue supporting their manufacturers’ own apps. Wear OS 6 is not the Gemini requirement; Google cited Wear OS 4 or newer for Gemini.
How to open Gemini on a Wear OS watch
Google lists three ways to start Gemini:
- Say “Hey Google”—although the available hotword can vary by region.
- Press and hold the watch’s side button.
- Tap the Gemini app icon on the watch.
If the Gemini icon is missing, check the watch’s Wear OS version and available system, Play Store, Gemini, and Google app updates. The paired phone must also be compatible, and the feature may not yet have reached the user’s country, language, account, or device build.

- Quick answers: Ask about cooking times and temperatures, check the weather, or find a place mentioned in an email.
- Google-service context: Summarize an email, add baseball games to a calendar, send a message, create a playlist, or navigate to an appointment address.
- Reminders and memory: Ask Gemini to remember a locker number, parking-space location, or another detail, or remind you to buy groceries after work.
- Natural-language requests: Speak conversationally instead of relying only on rigid, predefined commands.
Gmail and Google Calendar access must be enabled in the Gemini app settings on the paired phone, with the necessary permissions granted. Google has not established one universal settings path for every Gemini app version, so the exact menu labels may differ.
These are capabilities Google describes, not a guarantee that every request will work identically on every watch. Account access, permissions, connectivity, app support, and regional availability all matter. Review what Gemini can access before enabling cross-service actions, particularly when email, calendar, messages, or remembered personal details are involved.
Circle to Search gets follow-up questions through AI Mode
The second update is separate from Gemini on Wear OS. Google added an option to continue a visual search in AI Mode, allowing users to ask follow-up questions without leaving the phone or tablet app they are currently using.

- Long-press the Home button or navigation bar.
- Circle, tap, highlight, or otherwise select something on the screen.
- Review the visual-search result or AI Overview.
- Scroll to the bottom of the result.
- Tap “dive deeper with AI Mode”.
- Ask follow-up questions about the selected item.
The change is most useful when the first visual result is only the beginning. For example, a user could circle a product in a video and ask about comparable items, identify a landmark and ask about its history, or highlight a technical diagram and request an explanation. Those are practical applications of the announced follow-up behavior, not a promise that every object or question will produce a reliable answer.

Google described AI Mode as useful for more complex visual searches and multi-step follow-ups. It is different from simply opening ordinary Google Search or launching the Gemini app: the selected on-screen content supplies the starting context while the user remains in the current app.
Circle to Search gaming help
Google also announced in-game assistance through Circle to Search. Players can use it to identify characters, find tips, discover strategies, and get help when stuck without manually leaving the mobile game.
The feature will be most useful when the relevant character, item, puzzle, or text is clearly visible. Results can be weaker when game elements are obscured, animated, unfamiliar, or difficult to distinguish, and AI-generated strategy advice can be wrong. It should be treated as an aid rather than an authoritative guide to every game state.

AI Mode is also coming through Google Lens
Google said AI Mode could also be accessed through Lens in the Google app on Android and iOS, initially identifying the United States and India as available markets. This availability is separate from the Wear OS 4 requirement and from Circle to Search support on a particular Android device.
Availability can change after the original announcement. A missing AI Mode option may reflect country, language, account, app version, device, or staged-rollout differences rather than a problem with the visual search itself.

Before assuming a watch supports Gemini, check all of the following:
- The watch runs Wear OS 4 or newer.
- The exact model—not merely the brand—is included in Google’s supported rollout.
- The watch is connected to a compatible paired phone or other compatible device.
- The watch, Google Play services, Gemini, and relevant phone apps are updated.
- Your country, language, Google account, and device build support the feature.
- Gmail, Calendar, Maps, messaging, or music permissions are enabled for the tasks you want to perform.
If Gemini does not appear, update the watch and phone, confirm the Wear OS version, check the Gemini app on the paired phone, and allow time for staged availability. If only email or calendar tasks fail, inspect the relevant permissions and account connection rather than assuming the watch itself is unsupported.

What the announcement means for smartwatch buyers
Gemini makes a Wear OS watch more useful for short, hands-free tasks: checking information while cooking, getting directions during a walk, creating reminders, or acting on calendar and messaging context without taking out a phone. Its value is less obvious for long answers, because a watch’s small display is not well suited to reading extended AI responses.
The biggest trade-off is convenience versus access. Cross-service features can save time, but they require permissions and account context. AI Mode adds a similarly convenient way to investigate what is visible on a phone screen, but its answers still need checking—especially for health, safety, travel disruptions, financial decisions, directions, appointment details, or any other high-consequence information.
For shoppers, a Pixel, Galaxy Watch, OnePlus Watch, OPPO watch, or Xiaomi watch is not automatically a Gemini-compatible purchase. Confirm the exact model’s Wear OS version and the current regional rollout before buying. Google’s original announcement confirms the direction of the platform, but it does not provide a complete model-by-model or August 2026 availability table.
