Google Maps was reported to be testing a Material 3 Expressive redesign for Wear OS, but it was not a confirmed platform-wide launch. The interface appeared in Google Maps beta version 25.24 and was seen by some users on Wear OS 5 in June 2025. Google had not officially confirmed that this specific Maps redesign was rolling out universally.

The update mainly changes the Maps home screen and “Search & go” Tile. It adds larger controls, more prominent shortcuts and a category grid, while the underlying map and navigation experience appeared largely unchanged.

What Google Maps’ redesigned Wear OS interface changes

The reported redesign replaces the relatively plain previous launcher with a denser layout designed to make common actions easier to reach on a round watch display.

Instead of three smaller, side-by-side circular controls, the tested home screen used two rows of larger controls for:

The map button was more prominent, while Home and Work shortcuts received greater visual emphasis. The shortcuts no longer showed the full saved address, leaving more room for tappable controls.

The reported design also included:

  • A teal accent color throughout the interface
  • Redesigned card containers for Recents
  • A Show more option exposing up to eight recent places
  • A grid of popular categories, including Restaurants, Groceries, Coffee, Restrooms, Parking, Parks, ATMs and Transit stations
  • Dedicated entries for Offline maps, Settings and account switching

The associated Search & go Tile was also redesigned, with shortcuts for the map, Home, Work, Recents, Nearby Places and Search. The initial report described the map layer itself as looking largely unchanged.

9to5Google reported the redesign on June 17, 2025, and identified Google Maps beta version 25.24 as the build in which it was observed.

What Material 3 Expressive means on Wear OS

Material 3 Expressive is Google’s design system for Android and Wear OS. Google describes it as a more expressive approach built around shape, color, typography, motion and interaction states, with layouts adapted to the constraints of round watch screens.

In practice, that can mean larger glanceable controls, more prominent containers, richer color and more obvious interaction feedback. The goal is not simply to make every button rounder; it is to make watch interfaces easier to scan and operate quickly.

Google introduced Material 3 Expressive as a major part of Wear OS 6, but the Maps report did not establish that every element of the tested interface used a particular published Material component. Nor did it establish that the teal accent followed the watch-face theme. It was simply the color shown in the reported test.

Google’s official background is available in its Wear OS 6 announcement and Material 3 Expressive design guidance for Wear OS.

This was a test, not a confirmed Wear OS-wide release

The most important distinction is between Google’s official Wear OS design direction and the specific Google Maps redesign.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Maps interface was reported in a beta build and appeared only for some users. Google had not formally announced this Maps rollout, so the layout could have been changed, expanded or withdrawn before reaching a stable release. The reports did not establish universal availability by watch model, country, account or software channel.

Android Authority also described the redesign as limited testing and reported seeing it on Wear OS 5.

Does Google Maps’ redesign require Wear OS 6?

No confirmed requirement was established. Google positioned Material 3 Expressive as a major part of Wear OS 6, yet the Google Maps test was observed on at least some Wear OS 5 watches.

That suggests the Maps interface may be distributed through the Google Maps app, a staged server-side rollout or an account-level experiment rather than being strictly dependent on a full operating-system upgrade. This is an inference, not an explanation confirmed by Google.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Seeing the redesign on Wear OS 5 does not mean every Wear OS 5 watch is eligible, and it does not mean an older watch receives the complete Wear OS 6 system redesign. It only shows that at least some Maps UI changes can arrive independently of a full OS update.

How to check whether your watch has it

There is no verified setting that forces the redesigned interface to appear. Start by updating the watch version of Google Maps—not just Google Maps on your phone.

  1. Wake the watch and open the Play Store.
  2. Swipe down from the top of the screen.
  3. Tap My Apps.
  4. Install any available Google Maps update, or tap Update all.

Google documents this process in its Wear OS update help.

Check the watch’s software version

  1. Open Settings on the watch.
  2. Tap System.
  3. Tap About.
  4. Open Versions.

The version shown on your phone is not necessarily the watch’s Wear OS version or the installed watch-app version. The reported Google Maps beta version 25.24 is a historical observation from June 2025, not a current installation requirement. It should not be treated as a reason to sideload an old beta build.

Why the redesign may still not appear

If Google Maps is updated but the interface remains unchanged, that does not necessarily indicate a problem with your watch. Possible explanations include:

  • A staged rollout
  • A server-side or account-level experiment
  • Device-specific eligibility
  • Regional availability
  • A different Maps release channel
  • The experiment having ended or changed
  • Insufficient support for the watch’s Maps experience

Joining a beta channel is not proof that your account will receive a particular UI experiment. Similarly, updating Wear OS does not guarantee that the Maps app will change at the same time.

Do not treat clearing app data, factory-resetting the watch or installing unofficial APKs as guaranteed fixes. An experimental interface can appear and later disappear as Google adjusts its rollout.

What remains unchanged

The reported changes primarily affect the Maps launcher and Tile. They do not demonstrate improvements to:

  • Map rendering
  • Route quality
  • GPS accuracy
  • Live traffic
  • Battery life

Google’s current Wear OS documentation still describes the core Maps features, including viewing your location, panning and zooming, starting navigation, turn-by-turn directions and automatic navigation launch on the watch. Depending on the watch and connection, Maps can also support LTE navigation and offline driving navigation.

Offline maps and phone-free navigation

The redesigned home screen reportedly included an Offline maps entry, making offline access more visible. That shortcut should not be confused with the redesign itself: offline maps are a functional feature with their own requirements.

Google’s current Pixel Watch guidance says the watch must be paired with an Android phone or tablet, and that Google Maps must be at least version 11.144.0705 for the documented offline-map feature. Maps can sync automatically while the watch is charging, or be synced manually from Google Maps on the watch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Offline navigation supports driving directions. Transit, bicycling and walking directions are not available offline. Offline driving also lacks real-time traffic and alternative routes. Offline maps may not be available everywhere because of legal, language or address-format restrictions.

These requirements are separate from the older Google Maps beta 25.24 observation. One number describes a reported experimental interface; the other is the current version reference in Google’s offline-maps help. See Google’s Pixel Watch offline-maps instructions for the documented limitations.

LTE, Bluetooth and offline use are different

An LTE watch can use cellular connectivity for supported navigation tasks when the phone is not nearby. A non-LTE watch generally depends more heavily on its phone or Wi-Fi connection unless it has the relevant maps downloaded for supported driving navigation.

Google also provides a Show on phone setting. According to Google, turning it off can make navigation updates faster and route audio come from the watch, but it uses more battery. That setting changes how navigation is handled; it does not prove that the Material 3 Expressive redesign is installed.

Is the new layout actually easier to use?

The design has plausible usability advantages, especially on a small circular display:

  • Larger controls may be easier to tap while walking or travelling.
  • Category shortcuts reduce typing and voice-search friction.
  • Shorter Home and Work labels leave more room for controls.
  • Recents and popular places make frequent tasks more glanceable.
  • The Tile could reduce the number of taps needed to begin common actions.
  • A layout designed for a round screen can use the centre and edges more effectively.

There are also trade-offs. More controls can make the screen feel denser, category grids may require additional scrolling, and removing address text may make similarly named saved places harder to distinguish. Larger containers and animations can consume valuable space, particularly on smaller cases. The teal styling may also be less visually consistent with some watch faces or themes.

These are design implications, not measured results. The available reports do not provide controlled usability testing, tap-time comparisons, battery measurements or navigation-accuracy tests.

Availability note

Status based on the cited information through August 18, 2026: Google’s official help pages document Google Maps, LTE navigation and offline navigation on Wear OS, but they do not provide a definitive public device-by-device or region-by-region availability list for this exact Material 3 Expressive home-screen redesign.

Bottom line

Google Maps’ Material 3 Expressive redesign was a real, meaningful Wear OS interface test—not a confirmed universal launch. It made the launcher and Tile more glanceable with larger controls, shortcuts, Recents and popular categories, while leaving the core map experience largely unchanged in the initial report.

Update Google Maps from the Play Store on the watch and check the watch’s own software versions, but do not assume that Wear OS 6, a phone-app update or beta enrollment will force the redesign to appear. Availability remains dependent on Google’s app rollout and eligibility decisions, and the test alone is not a reason to buy or replace a watch.
