The former Fitbit app became the Google Health app on May 19, 2026. The hardware is still branded Fitbit, but current setup and account management use Google Health and a Google Account. Google explains the app transition here.
What you need before setting up a Fitbit
- Your Fitbit and its supplied charging cable
- An Android phone or iPhone with internet access
- Bluetooth enabled
- A personal Google Account
- The latest Google Health app
- Enough battery on both the phone and Fitbit
- The Fitbit close to the phone during setup
Google currently lists Android 11 or later and iOS 16.4 or later as the minimum phone requirements. Some Huawei and Xiaomi phones can still have compatibility problems even when they meet the operating-system requirement. Check Google’s current compatibility information before troubleshooting a phone that is not recognized.
Is the Fitbit app still called Fitbit?
As of May 19, 2026, the Fitbit app experience was renamed and redesigned as the Google Health app. Its main areas are Today, Fitness, Sleep, and Health. Fitbit remains the name of the devices.

Older packaging, screenshots, store listings, and support pages may still say “Fitbit app,” “Fitbit account,” or “Fitbit Premium.” If you are looking for the current app, search for Google Health in Google Play or the App Store.
How to set up your Fitbit step by step
1. Charge the Fitbit
Connect the Fitbit to its supplied charger before starting. This helps prevent pairing or firmware installation from being interrupted by a low battery. Keep it on or near the charger if Google offers a device update during setup.
Charging connectors vary between Fitbit families and generations, so a replacement cable must match the exact model.
2. Install or update Google Health
On Android, install Google Health from Google Play. On iPhone, use the App Store. If the old Fitbit app is already installed, update it or install the current Google Health version shown by the store.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Device-specific setup pages for the Charge 5 and Charge 6 follow this same general process.
3. Sign in with Google
Open Google Health and tap Sign in with Google. Select an existing personal Google Account or create one, then continue with the setup prompts.
Use the same Google Account consistently. It is used to recognize your Fitbit, retain cloud-backed health data, and manage any Google Health Premium subscription. A Google Workspace account cannot be used to link Google Health.
4. Pair the Fitbit inside Google Health
- Keep the Fitbit close to the phone.
- Follow the device-add or pairing prompt in Google Health.
- Select your Fitbit when it appears.
- Confirm the pairing code if one is shown on both devices.
- Wait for the pairing-complete screen.
Do not begin by pairing the Fitbit from the phone’s Bluetooth settings. Pairing it there first can interfere with the in-app setup flow. Google’s pairing guidance recommends starting inside Google Health.

The exact names and menu locations vary by phone and operating-system version. Google Health may need access to:

- Fitbit Charge 6 tracks key metrics from calories and Active Zone Minutes to Daily Readiness and sleep; move more with 40+ exercise modes, built-in GPS, all-day activity tracking, 24/7 heart rate, automatic exercising tracking, and more[1]
- See your heart rate in real time: Just link your Charge 6 to compatible exercise machines, like treadmills, ellipticals, and more[2]; and stay connected with YouTube Music controls[3]
- Tune into your body: Track your response to stress with a stress management score; learn about the quality of your sleep with a personalized nightly Sleep Score; and wake up more naturally with the Smart Wake alarm
- Run your routine with Google essentials: Find your way seamlessly during runs or rides with turn-by-turn directions from Google Maps on Fitbit Charge 6; and when you need a snack break on the go, just tap to pay with Google Wallet[1,4]
- Unlock more with Google Health Premium: With a premium membership, get personalized coaching that’s built with Gemini and adapts to your life[7]; get a 3-month trial at no cost to you[5] (Google Health Premium subscription sold separately)
- Bluetooth or Nearby Devices: for communication with the Fitbit.
- Location Services and location permission: required by some phones for discovery, syncing, clock updates, and related features.
- Notifications: for calls, messages, calendar events, and app alerts.
- Background activity and data: to keep syncing and notifications working when Google Health is not open.
- Calendar: if you want calendar-related features.
- Microphone: for supported voice features.
- Local-network access: for certain watch apps or integrations.
On Android, battery optimization and Data Saver can restrict Google Health. Allow background data and, where your phone provides the option, set Google Health to unrestricted or optimized battery use that permits background activity. Google’s Android troubleshooting guide covers these settings.
6. Complete your health profile
Google Health may ask for height, weight, sex, birth information or age-related details, and activity goals. These details help calculate estimates such as stride length, distance, basal metabolic rate, and calorie burn. Enter them as accurately as possible and update them if they change.
These calculations are estimates for wellness use, not clinical measurements.
7. Install updates and complete the first sync
Keep the Fitbit near the phone and leave Google Health open until the first sync finishes. If a firmware update starts, keep the device charged and do not force-close the app.
When setup is complete, the app should show the Fitbit, its battery level, and a recent sync time. Fitbit devices normally sync automatically throughout the day and when Google Health is opened while the device is nearby. Google describes the process in its syncing guidance.
How existing Fitbit-account users sign in
New users should use Sign in with Google. If you still have an older Fitbit account, open Google Health and use the migration prompt to move that account to Google.
- Sign in with your former Fitbit credentials when prompted.
- Review the data and settings that will be transferred.
- Choose the Google Account to associate with the Fitbit data.
- Complete the migration instructions.
Google says Fitbit-account-only access is no longer available after May 19, 2026. Migration is irreversible, although historical data selected during the process remains available in the Google Account. A Google Workspace account cannot be used for this link. See Google’s account-migration instructions.

Android
On Android, check Bluetooth, Location Services, Nearby Devices permission, notifications, background data, battery restrictions, and Data Saver. Manufacturer menus differ, but the relevant controls are usually found under Google Health’s app permissions and battery settings.
If automatic syncing works only while the app is open, background activity or battery optimization is a likely cause.

iPhone
On iPhone, confirm that the phone meets the iOS requirement, Bluetooth is enabled, and Google Health has notification permission. Enable calendar access if you use calendar features, and review background app behavior if syncing is delayed.
Apple changes Settings labels and layouts between iOS releases. Pair the Fitbit from Google Health rather than manually adding it in Bluetooth settings.

In Google Health, open Connections and select the Fitbit. Check the device status, battery level, firmware information, and last-sync time.
Fitbit uses Bluetooth Low Energy to communicate with phones and tablets. Synced data is stored with the account, so signing in with the same Google Account on another compatible phone normally restores access to cloud-backed history.
Customize your Fitbit after setup
Set practical goals
Choose targets such as daily steps, Active Zone Minutes or another activity goal, exercise frequency, sleep duration, hourly movement reminders, and—if useful—weight or nutrition goals. These are customizable behavior targets, not medically optimal numbers.
Configure notifications
Depending on the model and phone, you may be able to receive calls, text messages, calendar events, selected app notifications, and movement reminders. Keep the phone connected, allow Google Health to run in the background, and enable notifications for the individual apps you want to appear.
Learn the controls for your model
Fitbit navigation is not universal. Many trackers use taps and swipes, while some watches also have physical buttons. Several Charge models use an upward swipe for daily stats, and the Charge 6 can use a right swipe to return to the previous screen. Your model may work differently, so use its model-specific guide rather than assuming these gestures apply to every Inspire, Charge, Versa, or Sense.
Set up exercise tracking
Some Fitbits let you start exercise from the device, while others rely more heavily on the app. GPS behavior also differs: some devices use connected GPS from the phone, while others include built-in GPS.
Some devices can automatically recognize activities. For example, Google’s Charge 6 documentation says SmartTrack automatically detects and records supported activities lasting at least 15 minutes. That threshold should not be assumed for every Fitbit model.

- 【Long Battery Life】The fitness watch uses magnetic fast charging to provide a better battery life experience. It takes 1-2 hours to fully charge and can be used for up to 7 days of regular use and 15 days of standby. Compatible mobile phone system: android5.0 (inclusive) and IOS9.0 (inclusive) or above.
- 【1.1" AMOLED Touch Color Screen】AMOLED HD touch color screen is designed with clear and bright display, providing you with high quality touch and visual experience. This smartwatch includes a large number of original dials and supports custom dials.
Heart-rate readings, calorie estimates, distance, and exercise classifications are wellness estimates rather than clinical measurements.
Set up sleep tracking
Wear the Fitbit comfortably and consistently overnight, and charge it before bed if the battery is low. Review sleep data in Google Health rather than relying only on the device display. Sleep stages and readiness-style metrics are estimates and are most useful as trends over time; they are not a diagnosis.
Choose a clock face or install apps
Supported watches may offer additional clock faces and apps, although availability varies by model and region. Some installations require Wi-Fi. Google currently says third-party apps and clock faces cannot be installed through Google Health for users in the European Economic Area. Third-party services may also require separate accounts and permissions.
See Google’s information on device apps and clock faces.
What to do on your first day
- Wear the Fitbit securely but comfortably.
- Keep it near your phone periodically so the first sync can complete.
- Start an exercise manually when you want the clearest activity record and GPS behavior.
- Review detailed activity, sleep, heart-rate, and exercise information in Google Health.
- Charge it before sleep if the battery is low.
- Wait for several days of data before judging trends; one day is not a meaningful baseline.
Fix common setup and syncing problems
The Fitbit does not appear
- Connect the Fitbit to its charger.
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled.
- Check the phone’s operating-system requirement.
- Turn Bluetooth off, wait about 10 seconds, and turn it on again.
- Restart the Fitbit and phone.
- Reopen Google Health and retry from inside the app.
- Forget the Fitbit in the phone’s Bluetooth settings if it was paired there first.
- Check that you are signed into the intended Google Account.
- Remove another Fitbit from the account if the model or setup flow requires it.
- Reinstall Google Health only after confirming that the current app can be downloaded again.
If the Fitbit still does not appear, contact Google or Fitbit support. Device compatibility and multiple-device behavior can vary by model.

It says the Fitbit is already connected
This usually means it is still paired with the previous phone, was added through Bluetooth first, or is associated with another account or interrupted setup. Forget it in Bluetooth settings, turn Bluetooth off and on, restart both devices, sign into the correct Google Account, and start again inside Google Health.
Syncing stopped
Check Bluetooth, phone proximity, Nearby Devices or location permission, Google Health’s background activity, battery optimization, Android Data Saver, and app or firmware updates. Restart the Fitbit if necessary. A phone connected to another Fitbit can also cause confusion.
Notifications do not arrive
Check notification permission for Google Health and for the individual phone app. Also check background restrictions, power-saving mode, Bluetooth range, and whether the Fitbit is connected to another phone. Some notification types are model-specific.
The device is frozen
Try a restart before considering a reset. A restart normally preserves activity data. Do not insert objects into small sensor holes; they may be microphones or altimeters.

For Charge 5 and Charge 6, open Settings on the device, choose Restart Device, then choose Restart. If the device is unresponsive, use the charger-specific recovery procedure in Google’s restart and reset instructions.
Use a factory reset only as a last resort
A factory reset can delete unsynced data stored on the device, alarms, goals, and notifications. Sync first if possible and follow the instructions for the exact model.
Moving your Fitbit to a new phone
- Install Google Health on the new phone.
- Sign in with the same Google Account.
- Grant the requested permissions.
- If the old phone is still nearby, forget the Fitbit from its Bluetooth settings, especially if notifications were enabled there.
- Open Google Health and confirm a recent sync on the new phone.
Cloud-stored data is normally available after signing in with the same account. The new phone must still meet Google’s current compatibility requirements.
Do you need Google Health Premium?
No. Basic Fitbit setup and core tracking do not require a Premium subscription. Google Health Premium is a separate service for eligible coaching and other subscription features.

Privacy and health-data limits
Fitbit data can include steps, distance, calories, heart rate, sleep stages, active minutes, weight, manually entered information, and data from connected services. Review Google Health’s permissions and the access granted to connected third-party apps. Those services may require separate accounts and may receive data according to their own terms.
Heart rate, sleep, calorie, stress, readiness, and similar metrics should be treated as estimates and wellness indicators. They are not a diagnosis or a substitute for medical advice. Google’s privacy information and data-category documentation explain how Fitbit data is handled for Google Account users.
Model-specific help
The generic Google Health setup flow works across many current Fitbit products, but exact controls differ among the Charge, Inspire, Luxe, Sense, and Versa families.
