Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 review: Why they’re so much better than the original

The Pixel Buds Pro 2 are smaller, lighter, and offer a new stabilizer, but fit remains personal and independent testing found only a slight ANC improvement. They make the most sense for people replacing earbuds or unhappy with the original, while satisfied owners can wait.

The Pixel Buds Pro 2 are smaller and lighter than the original Pixel Buds Pro, with a twist-to-adjust stabilizer and four eartip sizes. They can be a worthwhile upgrade if the original fit was loose or its sound was too bass-forward, but reviews disagree about comfort and independent testing found only a slight ANC improvement. If your original pair fits and works well, there is no automatic reason to replace it.

The short version

The Pro 2 make meaningful changes to fit and add updated Google features, but the upgrade is not equally valuable for every listener. Fit is personal, Google’s strongest ANC claims are manufacturer claims, and current prices should be checked rather than inferred from launch prices.

  • Design: Google says the Pro 2 are 24% lighter and 27% smaller than the original, and add a twist-to-adjust stabilizer and four eartip sizes.
  • ANC: Google claims twice-as-strong ANC, while SoundGuys found the improvement slight in its comparison.
  • Battery: Google estimates up to eight hours with ANC and up to 30 hours with the case; SoundGuys measured 7 hours 55 minutes for the Pro 2 in its test.
  • Best for: People replacing earbuds, original-model owners unhappy with fit or bass, and Android or Pixel users who value Google integrations.
  • Wait if: Your original pair fits and meets your needs.

What changed from the original Pixel Buds Pro?

Google says the Pixel Buds Pro 2 are 24% lighter and 27% smaller than the original Pixel Buds Pro. They also add a twist-to-adjust stabilizer and include four eartip sizes. These are Google’s comparison figures; they do not establish that the new shape will fit everyone.

Google Pixel Buds 2a - Wireless Bluetooth Earbuds - Hazel
  • Google Pixel Buds 2a deliver lightweight comfort, crisp audio, Active Noise Cancellation, and a dependable battery, all for less[1]
  • Hear only what you want to hear; Google Tensor A1 powers Active Noise Cancellation with Silent Seal 1.5 to help block external noise; or switch to Transparency mode to hear the world around you while you listen
  • Immerse yourself in clear, crisp audio with the 11 mm dynamic speaker driver, or customize the levels of bass, treble, and more with the 5-band equalizer
  • Pixel Buds 2a are built for lightweight comfort and an impeccable fit; secure them during workouts or commutes with the twist-to-adjust stabilizer, or twist the other direction for relaxed comfort
  • Hear and be heard with Clear Calling; it helps block background noise, so wind, external chatter, or other distractions in your environment won’t interrupt your conversations[2]

The shape and stabilizer are meant to give listeners more ways to secure the earbuds. That may address a problem for people whose original pair loosened, but reviewers’ experiences differ: WIRED praised the smaller buds for smaller ears, while TechRadar found the stabilizer potentially awkward and reported that the buds seated awkwardly for some users. Treat the design as a fit option to try, not a universal comfort guarantee.

Fit and comfort

Try the included eartip sizes and adjust the stabilizer to find a secure, comfortable position. Fit depends on ear shape; a stabilizer that helps one person may feel awkward or create pressure for another. A good seal also matters for sound and noise isolation, so check the fit before judging the bass or ANC.

How to find a comfortable fit

  1. Try the included eartip sizes rather than assuming one size will work for both ears.
  2. Insert the earbuds and use the twist-to-adjust stabilizer to test retention.
  3. Listen for a secure seal and check whether the buds remain comfortable during ordinary movement.
  4. If the seal feels poor or the buds cause discomfort, try another tip size or position. Do not assume the stabilizer suits every ear.

Noise cancellation: improved, but compare the claims with testing

Google claims that the Pixel Buds Pro 2 deliver twice-as-strong ANC compared with the original. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified result. SoundGuys found the improvement slight in its comparison, so the available evidence does not support presenting a twofold improvement as a measured fact.

The Pro 2 may still be a useful choice if noise handling is important, but results depend on fit and listening conditions. A poor seal can undermine isolation, and no single comparison establishes that these earbuds outperform every rival in every environment.

Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 - Wireless Bluetooth Earbuds - Hazel
  • Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 are designed to be the most comfortable earbuds yet, with a twist-to-adjust fit; they’re built for Gemini, with the Tensor chip that powers premium, immersive sound and cancels twice as much noise as before[1]
  • Pixel Buds Pro 2 are made to stay put; use the twist-to-adjust stabilizer to lock your earbuds in during workouts, or adjust the other way for all-day comfort
  • Active Noise Cancellation with Silent Seal 2.0 cancels up to twice as much noise as before[1]; Adaptive Audio lets you be aware of your surroundings while drowning out distractions in loud spaces for comfortable listening[10]
  • Immerse yourself in clear, crisp audio; the 11 mm drivers and high-frequency chamber deliver powerful bass and smooth treble, and spatial audio with head tracking give you immersive surround sound[2]
  • Go live with Gemini, your Google AI assistant; brainstorm ideas, make grocery lists, and schedule events, just by using your voice – with advanced audio processing, you can have clear conversations, even in noisy environments[2,11]

Sound quality: consider your preference

The Pro 2 may appeal to listeners who found the original too bass-forward. SoundGuys notes that the newer model may suit people who disliked the original’s fit or sound. Sound preferences are subjective, and the supplied research does not establish one model as the best-sounding choice for everyone.

Try to get a good seal before judging the sound: eartip fit can affect both bass and isolation. If you already like the original’s sound and it meets your needs, a change in tuning alone may not justify an upgrade.

Battery life and charging

Google estimates up to eight hours of listening with ANC enabled and up to 30 hours total with the charging case. SoundGuys measured 7 hours 55 minutes for the Pro 2 and 7 hours 6 minutes for the original with ANC on. Those are SoundGuys test results, not a promise of the runtime you will get.

Battery life varies with the device, enabled features, usage, and environment, as Google notes. SoundGuys reports that the Pro 2 can be charged over USB-C or with a Qi-compatible charging pad.

Bluetooth compatibility and Google features

Google’s specification sheet lists Bluetooth 5.4 and Bluetooth 4.0-or-newer compatibility, including Android and iOS devices, tablets, and laptops for pairing. Basic Bluetooth audio compatibility is broader than access to every feature.

Google says full feature access requires a Google Account, an Android 6.0-or-newer companion phone, and internet. The product also includes Google-promoted features such as Conversation Detection, Clear Calling, spatial audio with head tracking, and Gemini-related functions; availability may depend on device, account, region, language, software, and connection. Check current support for the feature you care about before buying.

The earbuds are a more natural fit for Android and Pixel users who want Google integrations. An iPhone or laptop user can pair for basic Bluetooth use, but should not expect the full feature set.

Verdict: should you upgrade?

The Pixel Buds Pro 2 are a considered upgrade, not an automatic one. Their smaller, lighter design and adjustable stabilizer offer a different fit, but reviews show that comfort remains individual. ANC has improved according to Google’s claim, while SoundGuys’ comparison describes the measured gain as slight.

Consider them if you are replacing earbuds, struggled with the original fit, disliked its sound, or value Google features on Android. Keep your first-generation pair if it fits and works well. Before buying, compare current prices and verify that your phone supports the particular features you want.
