Google released its dedicated Google Pixel Watch companion app on the Google Play Store on October 6, 2022, ahead of the first Pixel Watch launch event. The app handles setup and pairing, plus Pixel Watch controls such as watch faces, tiles and notifications. The release is a historical launch event—not a new app launch today—and downloading the app alone does not let you use a watch.
What launched on October 6, 2022?
Google made the Pixel Watch app publicly available on Google Play before its Made by Google event. The app was the phone-side companion for setting up and managing the company’s first smartwatch; the watch itself was being formally introduced around the same time. Contemporaneous coverage of the Play Store release described the app and its launch-era controls.
Installing it did not provide access to a watch: pairing required a compatible Pixel Watch. The original coverage’s “now available” wording applied to October 6, 2022, not to a current release.
What does the Pixel Watch app do?
The app provides a dedicated place on an Android phone to set up and manage a Pixel Watch. At launch, reported controls included:
#1 Best Overall
- The new Google Pixel Watch 5 offers a smarter way to a healthier you.[1,2]; Designed for Gemini Intelligence, get proactive help, and personalized insights from Google Health[3,4]; watch is compatible with Android devices only; not compatible with iOS devices
- Precision-crafted to do it all: The Google Pixel Watch 5 features the domed Actua 360 display with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass and up to 40 hours of battery life[1,5]
- Metrics that matter: Advanced sensors help you stay ahead of your health and wellness; and Google Pixel’s most accurate heart rate tracking is fine-tuned for your activity[6,7]
- Understand your sleep like never before: Your watch captures insights like the time spent in sleep stages to breathing regularity, then summarizes it all in a personalized Sleep Score[8,9]
- Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]
- Pairing the watch and completing initial setup.
- Choosing and customizing watch faces, including color options.
- Selecting tiles and arranging the information available from the watch face.
- Managing which phone notifications reach the watch.
- Adjusting device, account and connectivity settings.
Those are launch-era capabilities, not a complete inventory of what the current watch ecosystem can do. Later Pixel Watch generations and software have added or expanded integrations involving Fitbit, Google Maps, Google Wallet, Gemini, safety features, cellular service and watch apps. The app does not itself provide every watch function; some depend on the watch, a Google service, Fitbit or a carrier.
Why is it separate from the Wear OS app?
The Pixel Watch launched with its own companion-app experience rather than relying on the older Wear OS by Google Smartwatch app in the same way as earlier watches. The dedicated app supports Pixel-specific setup and controls. That does not mean every Wear OS watch uses the Pixel Watch app: other manufacturers may provide a different companion app, and installing Google’s app will not make it pair with a non-Pixel watch.

Which phones are compatible?
Google’s current requirements vary by Pixel Watch generation. The minimum Android versions below are Google-listed requirements, not a guarantee that every phone running that version is supported in every region or setup scenario.
| Watch | Minimum Android version listed by Google |
|---|---|
| Pixel Watch | Android 8.0 or newer |
| Pixel Watch 2 | Android 9.0 or newer |
| Pixel Watch 3 | Android 10.0 or newer |
| Pixel Watch 4 | Android 11.0 or newer |
Google’s setup guidance describes most setup scenarios as using a compatible phone on Android 10 or newer; treat that as practical guidance alongside the generation-specific minimums. Setup also requires a Google Account, internet access and Bluetooth. Google explicitly says iPhones are not supported. Check Google’s compatibility and availability guidance for current model, region and cellular details.

How to install and pair a Pixel Watch
Install the official app
- On a compatible Android phone, open the Google Play Store.
- Search for Google Pixel Watch and select the official app published by Google.
- Tap Install. If the app is already installed, Play Store may show Update instead.
- Open the app and follow its prompts. Google says the latest app version is required for setup, and updates are delivered through Google Play. See Google’s app installation and update instructions.
Pair and finish setup
- Charge both devices, enable Bluetooth, and connect the phone to Wi-Fi or mobile data. Allow location access when requested.
- Turn on the watch by holding the crown for about three seconds, then place it near the phone.
- Accept the Fast Pair prompt if it appears. If it does not, open the Pixel Watch app and choose the watch shown there.
- Compare the pairing codes on the phone and watch. Tap Pair only if they match.
- Sign in with a Google Account, accept the terms, and select the country of purchase for warranty purposes.
- Choose whether to restore a backup, set wrist and crown orientation, and follow any remaining prompts.
- Complete any applicable Fitbit, LTE, safety, Wallet or additional-app setup. Pairing can take several minutes, and Google says the watch updates automatically after setup.
Google’s full setup instructions cover the current on-screen flow, which may vary by watch generation and software.
If the app does not appear in Google Play
- Check the Android version: compare the phone with the minimum for the watch generation.
- Check the Play Store country: app visibility and device availability can vary by region. Google advises checking that the Play Store account is associated with a supported country or region.
- Check device compatibility: Google Play may hide apps it considers incompatible with the phone.
- Update Google components: bring the phone software, Play Store and Google Play services up to date, then search again.
- Confirm the listing: select the official Google Pixel Watch app, not an unrelated watch-face or smartwatch utility.
- Check whether it is already installed: look in the phone’s app drawer or the Play Store’s installed-app list.
If the app remains unavailable, consult Google’s compatibility and regional availability page; changing the watch app will not bypass a device or region restriction.

- Save time with things like Google Wallet for contactless payments, turn-by-turn directions using Maps, and event notifications from Calendar
- Stay connected and productive wherever you go; respond to messages, manage your inbox, and make calls right from your wrist
Fix common pairing and setup problems
The watch does not appear
- Check that Bluetooth is on and grant location and nearby-device permissions when prompted.
- Make sure the watch is charged and switched on, and keep it close to the phone. Google recommends a distance within 0.5 metres (1.6 feet) for Fast Pair.
- Keep the phone connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data, restart both devices, and check for software and app updates before trying again.
See Google’s pairing troubleshooting steps for additional checks.
The pairing codes do not match
Do not accept the request. Restart the watch by holding its crown for three seconds, wait for it to restart fully, bring it near the phone and try pairing again. This is Google’s specified recovery path in its setup guidance.

Best Value
- The Google Pixel Watch 3 is designed for performance, with advanced fitness from Fitbit[1,2]; the 45mm screen is twice as bright and 40% larger than before, making it easier to see your stats and info[1]
- Maximize your performance with advanced running features; build custom run workouts and get real-time guidance and advanced form tracking[3]
- Enhance your run routine with Fitbit Premium; Google AI uses your goals, past runs, and readiness to power personalized run recommendations[3]
- Know what your body is ready for each day with readiness; it uses sleep, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability to show if you’re ready to take on a workout or prioritize recovery[3]
- Cardio load measures how hard your heart works so you can see how hard you’ve pushed; compare trends to see if you’re under- or over-training[3]
Setup is stuck or reports a network error
If setup takes more than 20 minutes, Google directs users to its dedicated troubleshooting process. For a network error, check that the phone has a working Wi-Fi or mobile connection, turn off Airplane Mode on both devices, confirm the Pixel Watch app has nearby-device permission, then retry. Follow Google’s connection and setup troubleshooting.
LTE service is not working
An LTE-capable watch needs activation and a supported carrier plan; carrier availability varies by country and watch generation, and extra carrier fees may apply. Check Google’s compatibility and cellular information and confirm activation with your carrier.
What has changed since the app first appeared?
The October 2022 story concerned the first Pixel Watch and its launch-era Android 8.0 minimum. That threshold should not be applied to every later model: Google now lists different Android minimums for Pixel Watch 2, 3 and 4. App availability, supported regions, carrier support and software features can also change over time.
For a current setup, use the Play Store listing and Google’s live support pages rather than relying on launch-day screenshots or requirements. The original release was a real app announcement, but its “now available” framing belongs to October 6, 2022.
