In May, Google’s video presented one demonstration using a Pixel phone and another using prototype glasses; the system was described as taking continuous audio and video, reasoning about its surroundings, and conversing about what it saw. A separate December session involved an Android XR glasses prototype, so the two events should not be treated as one hands-on.
What did Google’s Gemini smart glasses actually do?
Google’s May 14, 2024 Project Astra video showed an AI assistant responding to a continuous stream of audio and video and conversing about its environment. Google described two continuous takes: one using a Pixel phone and one using prototype glasses. The video was a demonstration, not a product announcement or evidence that consumers could buy the glasses.
A separate firsthand account from a Google I/O attendee described a camera-based Project Astra demonstration with soft toys. The assistant transcribed speech and created a story based on the objects in view. That report describes an attendee demo, not the prototype-glasses take in Google’s video.
What the May 2024 Project Astra video showed
Google described Project Astra as an experimental assistant able to process continuous audio and video, reason about what it was seeing in real time, and converse with the tester about the surroundings. The video included both a phone demonstration and a prototype-glasses demonstration.

These examples show the intended interaction: the assistant could use visual and conversational context rather than responding only to a typed question. They do not establish a complete feature list, final hardware design, or how the technology would perform in everyday use.
What was different about the December 2024 glasses demo?
Google announced Android XR on December 12, 2024, describing a platform for future headsets and glasses. Google said a small group of trusted testers would begin testing Project Astra on prototype glasses. The company also described future glasses use cases such as directions, translations, and message summaries. These were plans and prototype testing—not a retail launch or confirmation that those capabilities were finished products.
December hands-on reports covered a separate Android XR glasses prototype session. They described demonstrations involving translation, navigation cues, and interactions prompted by objects. Those reports should be distinguished from the May keynote video and from the attendee account of the soft-toy demo.

What the demonstrations do not prove
- That the prototype was a finished or publicly available product.
- That every feature shown or described would ship in consumer glasses.
- A retail price, final specification, or release date.
- That the May phone and glasses demonstrations were a single hands-on session.
- How reliably the experimental system would work outside a demonstration.
Google framed privacy as part of its prototype-testing rationale. In its December 12, 2024 Android XR announcement, Shahram Izadi, VP and GM of XR, said: “This will help us create helpful products and ensure we’re building in a way that respects privacy for you and those around you.” That statement describes the testing goal; it is not a complete consumer privacy specification.
