Google’s Gemini smart-glasses plan was real, but the original story was not a product announcement. A July 2024 report said Google had approached EssilorLuxottica—the eyewear company behind Ray-Ban and Oakley—about putting Gemini into future smart glasses. It did not confirm a signed deal, Ray-Ban branding, specifications, pricing, or a launch date.
Google’s confirmed strategy later shifted into Android XR, a platform developed with Samsung and Qualcomm. Google has since named Gentle Monster and Warby Parker as eyewear partners and says its first audio-focused glasses are expected in fall 2026.

What the July 2024 report actually said
According to reporting summarized by 9to5Google and attributed to The Verge, Google had approached EssilorLuxottica about putting its Gemini assistant into future smart glasses.

That is a much narrower claim than “Google announced Ray-Ban Gemini glasses.” The report described exploratory partnership discussions. It did not establish that an agreement had been signed, that the glasses would carry the Ray-Ban name, or that a product announcement was imminent. It also gave no confirmed launch date, price, final design, camera specifications, battery life, or availability details.

Google would not necessarily have been manufacturing the glasses itself. The proposed model was more likely to pair Google’s AI and software with an established eyewear company’s design, manufacturing, prescription-lens expertise, branding, and retail network.
Why EssilorLuxottica mattered
EssilorLuxottica is far more than a frame supplier. Its portfolio includes Ray-Ban and Oakley, as well as major retail businesses such as LensCrafters and Sunglass Hut. That would give Google access to an existing fashion and distribution ecosystem instead of requiring it to create an eyewear brand from scratch.
The complication was that EssilorLuxottica already worked with Meta on Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. Contemporary reporting also said Meta was considering a multibillion-euro investment for roughly a 5% stake in EssilorLuxottica. That possibility made the relationship strategically important, but it does not prove that Meta blocked Google or that Google’s discussions definitively failed. The cited reporting establishes competitive pressure, not the final outcome of the negotiations.

It is also important not to equate EssilorLuxottica with Ray-Ban specifically. The company owns and operates multiple brands. The 2024 report concerned a possible relationship with EssilorLuxottica, not a confirmed Ray-Ban-branded Google product.

What Gemini could have brought to glasses
The 2024 report did not specify a final design. The most plausible interpretation was a screen-free or display-less pair of AI glasses with microphones, speakers, a camera, and a connection to a smartphone.
That concept fits Google’s Project Astra demonstrations, in which Gemini-like assistance could understand visual surroundings and respond conversationally. In glasses, the camera could provide first-person context while the speakers deliver hands-free answers. Possible uses included:
- asking what an object, sign, or place is;
- getting directions or translation help;
- taking photos or videos;
- making calls and handling messages;
- playing music;
- asking questions about what the wearer is seeing.
However, the connection to Project Astra was an inference in the contemporary coverage, not confirmation that Astra was the operating system or product name for Google’s glasses. Likewise, demonstrations should not be treated as guaranteed launch features.
Google’s confirmed route became Android XR
Google later made its broader strategy official. In December 2024, it introduced Android XR, a platform for headsets and glasses developed with Samsung and Qualcomm. Rather than announcing one Google-branded pair of glasses, Google positioned Android XR as an ecosystem that multiple hardware and eyewear companies could use.

In 2025, Google announced work with eyewear brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, alongside Samsung. Google described prototypes containing cameras, microphones, and speakers, with Gemini providing assistance based on the wearer’s surroundings.
This platform approach validates the basic ambition behind the 2024 report—Google does want Gemini on lightweight eyewear—but it does not confirm that the original EssilorLuxottica discussions became a deal.
What is coming in fall 2026?
In its May 19, 2026 announcement, Google said its first glasses category would be audio glasses, expected later in fall 2026. The announced designs involve Samsung, Gentle Monster, and Warby Parker. Google says the glasses will pair with both Android and iOS phones and provide spoken assistance rather than relying on an in-lens display.

These are announced capabilities and examples, not a guarantee that every feature will be available at launch in every country, language, phone, or supported app. As of the latest cited official announcements, Google has not published a final price, exact release day, complete launch-country list, final model names, or full technical specifications.
Audio glasses are not the same as AR glasses
| Category | What it does | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Audio glasses | Use cameras, microphones, speakers, a phone connection, and Gemini for spoken assistance. | They can be lighter and simpler, but information is less glanceable and spoken answers can be intrusive. |
| Display glasses | Add an in-lens display for information such as navigation or translation captions. | Displays introduce greater challenges around power, heat, weight, optics, prescription integration, and cost. |
| XR headsets | Provide larger immersive displays and spatial-computing experiences. | They are substantially larger and are not a practical substitute for everyday glasses. |
Google explicitly separates audio glasses from display glasses. The first announced Google-backed glasses are audio-focused. Calling them “AR glasses” without qualification would suggest that they project information into the wearer’s view, which has not been established for these first models.

Ray-Ban Meta is the closest established alternative to the concept described in the 2024 report. It is an existing camera-and-audio eyewear product with Ray-Ban branding, Meta AI, a retail ecosystem, and an ongoing relationship between Meta and EssilorLuxottica.

It is too early to declare a winner before Google’s products have final specifications, prices, regional availability, and independent testing. Readers who want smart glasses now should evaluate current Ray-Ban Meta models. Readers specifically seeking Gemini and Android XR should wait for an official Google or partner product page rather than treating the 2024 report as a purchase announcement.
Privacy, phone dependence, and accuracy
Camera-equipped glasses raise practical questions that matter as much as assistant features. Buyers should look for clear answers about whether a visible indicator shows when the camera is recording, whether the camera or microphones can be disabled, how recordings and Gemini prompts are processed, what is stored in the cloud, and how users can delete data.
By Google’s own account, prototype testing with trusted users included attention to privacy for both wearers and people nearby. That demonstrates a stated design concern, not a completed privacy policy for the final products.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →“Works with iOS” should not be interpreted as guaranteed feature parity with Android. Availability may vary according to operating system, Gemini app version, country, language, age, account type, phone hardware, network connection, and supported third-party apps. The glasses may also rely on a paired phone for connectivity, processing, apps, or location; Google’s cited announcements do not establish that every function will work independently.
Finally, Gemini’s visual interpretation can be wrong. A wearable assistant might misidentify an object, mistranslate a sign, misunderstand a direction, summarize a message incorrectly, or give unsafe advice. Users should verify important information rather than treating a spoken answer as authoritative.
What this means for the original rumor
The 2024 report was an early sign of Google’s interest in AI-powered eyewear, not evidence of a finished Ray-Ban product. The later Android XR announcements show that Google pursued the broader category through a multi-partner platform strategy.
The clearest timeline is:
- July 2024: Google was reportedly seeking talks with EssilorLuxottica about Gemini smart glasses.
- December 2024: Google announced Android XR with Samsung and Qualcomm for headsets and glasses.
- May 2025: Google named Gentle Monster and Warby Parker as eyewear partners.
- May 2026: Google previewed audio glasses expected in fall 2026.
- July 2026: Google described further Samsung collaboration involving upcoming intelligent eyewear.
That makes the original claim directionally accurate but frequently overstated. Google did want Gemini-powered glasses. What remains unconfirmed is whether the original EssilorLuxottica approach produced any agreement—and whether Ray-Ban would ever be involved.
