The Gorilla Fastback Thunderbolt is a 44 mm, 100 m water-resistant chronograph limited to 99 pieces, with a black-coated titanium case and a skeletonized-looking display. Its defining technical choice is a Dubois Dépraz chronograph module on an automatic ETA 2892 base—not an integrated chronograph movement. Launch coverage put its price at US$8,500, but Gorilla’s product listing is marked sold out, so that figure should not be read as a current offer.
What the Thunderbolt is—and what makes it distinctive
The Thunderbolt is Gorilla’s first chronograph in its Fastback line, developed in collaboration with Swiss module maker Dubois Dépraz. The design mixes motorsport references with an openworked dial intended to expose the chronograph mechanism. Gorilla says the dial and chronograph-hand design take inspiration from the 1969 Omega Speedmaster Alaska Prototype, the crown from a 1969 Ford Mustang fuel cap, and the multicolor graphics from Le Mans-winning GT40 livery. Those are the manufacturer’s stated design inspirations, not independent historical conclusions.
Gorilla describes each of the 99 numbered watches as engraved with the signatures of Gorilla and Dubois Dépraz. Its official feature calls this “highlighting the exceptional partnership between independent manufacturers”—promotional language that explains the brand’s framing of the collaboration.
Movement: a modular chronograph, not an integrated one
Gorilla identifies the movement as a Dubois Dépraz DD268 skeletonized chronograph module built on an automatic ETA 2892 base; retailer Junge & Co. specifies the base as ETA 2892-A2. In a modular design, the chronograph mechanism is a separate module fitted to the base movement. An integrated chronograph, by contrast, is designed as a chronograph from the start rather than assembled from a base caliber and an added module.

That distinction is relevant to enthusiasts choosing a watch, but it is not by itself evidence of poor reliability, inferior timekeeping, or lower-quality construction. Hodinkee notes the familiar preference some collectors have for integrated chronographs; it also praises the Thunderbolt’s case and pushers. No reliability study, service history, or timing test is established for this model.
SJX reports automatic winding, a 4 Hz frequency (28,800 beats per hour), and a 42-hour power reserve. The listed functions are hours, minutes, seconds, and chronograph.

Case, display and legibility
The case is Grade 5 titanium with black DLC treatment. Independent launch accounts describe a ceramic bezel and sapphire crystal; Gorilla also specifies ceramic pushers and an orange aluminum case part-line. The manufacturer says the chronograph indications use X1 Super-LumiNova.
The watch’s openworked appearance comes from the dial exposing the chronograph mechanism, according to SJX; that is different from a movement whose components have themselves been skeletonized. The exposed mechanism gives the dial its visual depth, while the open layout may make a conventional, at-a-glance reading less straightforward. Gorilla’s lume claim addresses visibility in low light, but no independent legibility or lume test is available.

Dimensions and fit
Hodinkee and SJX agree on a 44 mm diameter and 100 m water resistance, but they give different thickness figures. The discrepancy remains unresolved in the published launch accounts:

The 57 mm lug-to-lug length and the 48.5 mm span across crown guards add useful context to the 44 mm diameter: wrist presence is not captured by the diameter alone. Without a wrist test, fit will depend on wrist shape and personal preference; the reported measurements are the practical starting point.

Edition size, price and buying status
Production is limited to 99 pieces. SJX corrected an earlier mistaken edition figure in its coverage; 99 is the supported quantity, also reported by Hodinkee and Gorilla.

Who should consider the Thunderbolt?
The Thunderbolt is most compelling for a buyer drawn to its exposed chronograph display, motorsport-influenced design and Grade 5 titanium construction, and who is comfortable with modular movement architecture. A buyer who prioritizes an integrated chronograph, understated dial, or a smaller case should weigh those preferences against the Thunderbolt’s specifications rather than assume its visual appeal will outweigh them.
For a considered comparison, focus on the factors the available information supports: the 44 mm diameter and 57 mm lug-to-lug measurement, the 13.1 mm versus 13.8 mm thickness discrepancy, visual openness versus reading clarity, modular versus integrated architecture, material and finishing, 99-piece production, and the historical US$8,500 launch price. No specific rival has been evaluated here, so these are comparison criteria rather than a head-to-head verdict.
