For a watch case, Grade 5 is generally described as harder and more scratch resistant, while Grade 2 is softer and easier to machine or refinish. Those are material tendencies—not a guarantee of how a finished watch will wear. Its surface finish, any coating or treatment, design, and use also matter.
What do the grade labels mean?
The numbers identify different titanium materials, not a ranking of watch quality. ASTM International’s B348/B348M-21 listing identifies Grade 2 as unalloyed titanium and Grade 5 as titanium alloy with 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium, commonly called Ti-6Al-4V. ASTM B348/B348M-21 is a specification for titanium and titanium-alloy bars and billets; it establishes the material classifications, not how a particular watch case will perform.

How can the grades differ in a watch case?
| Material | Composition | Watch-case tendency | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 2 | Unalloyed titanium, according to ASTM B348/B348M-21 | Described as softer than Grade 5 | Described as easier to machine or refinish |
| Grade 5 | Titanium alloy with 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium, according to ASTM B348/B348M-21 | Described as harder and more scratch resistant than Grade 2 | The cited watch comparison does not establish a specific service or refinishing outcome for an individual watch |
The case-related tendencies in the table come from WatchSpecLab’s comparison of Grade 2 and Grade 5 in watch cases, a secondary source. They do not amount to a controlled, matched test of watches. Neither grade makes a watch scratch-proof, and the available comparison does not support a precise estimate of how much more scratch resistant one specific model will be.
Which grade should you choose?
Consider Grade 5 if surface hardness is a priority
The general comparison favors Grade 5 for hardness and scratch resistance. Treat that as one factor, not a promise that a particular case will stay mark-free: the finish and any surface treatment affect the exposed surface, and daily wear varies.

Consider Grade 2 if machining or refinishing is relevant
Grade 2 is described as easier to machine or refinish. That does not mean every watchmaker can refinish every case, or that every finish or treatment can be restored in the same way. Check the manufacturer’s service guidance or ask a qualified watchmaker about the exact model before relying on refinishing as a deciding factor.
What should you check on the exact watch?
A grade label alone is not enough to compare two finished watches. Check the maker’s specifications and service information for the model you are considering:

- Components: Confirm the stated material for the case, bracelet, clasp, and any other part that matters to you. A general “titanium” description does not establish that every component uses the same grade.
- Finish and treatment: Look for details about the surface finish or coating, since the grade alone does not describe the case’s complete surface behavior.
- Fit and feel: Compare the watch’s actual dimensions and weight rather than inferring them from its titanium grade.
- Ownership support: Check what the manufacturer or service provider says about repairs and refinishing for that specific case and finish.
- Price and availability: Compare current listings for the exact models and region. The material distinction by itself does not establish a price difference or make one watch the better buy.
What ASTM’s classification does—and does not—tell you
ASTM’s B348/B348M-21 listing is useful for checking the composition behind the grade names. It is not a watch-wear test, and it cannot determine a specific watch’s weight, scratch performance, finish durability, or service cost. ASTM also has a historical B348-13 listing that identifies Grade 2 as UNS R50400 and Grade 5 as UNS R56400; the composition comparison here uses the B348/B348M-21 listing.
