The four Grand Seiko 4 Seasons GMTs share a seasonal design idea, but divide into two distinct movement pairs: the SBGJ251 and SBGJ249 use the mechanical Hi-Beat 9S86, while the SBGE271 and SBGE269 use Spring Drive 9R66. The SBGJ pair is slightly narrower and rated to 3 bar; the SBGE pair is rated to 10 bar and has a longer stated power reserve. Within each pair, the main choice is the seasonal dial and its color treatment.

| Reference | Seasonal phase | Movement | Case diameter × thickness | Water resistance | Dial distinction |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SBGJ251 | Shunbun, spring equinox | Hi-Beat automatic 9S86 | 39.5 × 14.1 mm | 3 bar | Green dial, rose-gold-tone GMT accents |
| SBGJ249 | Shōsho, early summer | Hi-Beat automatic 9S86 | 39.5 × 14.1 mm | 3 bar | Wave-pattern dial, blue-steel GMT hand |

| SBGE269 | Tōji, winter solstice | Spring Drive automatic 9R66 | 40.2 × 14.0 mm | 10 bar | Winter-landscape theme |
These are Grand Seiko’s listed specifications, not measurements of a review sample. The 2021 announcement describes the collection as representing selected points in Japan’s 24-season calendar: “Each of these GMT watches celebrates one of the year’s 24 seasonal phases or sekki.” Grand Seiko’s February 25, 2021 announcement introduced the four models in two launches: Shunbun and Shōsho in May, followed by Kanro and Tōji in September.
How the two movement pairs differ
SBGJ251 and SBGJ249: Hi-Beat mechanical
The SBGJ watches use caliber 9S86, an automatic movement with manual winding, 37 jewels, and a stated approximate power reserve of 55 hours. Its 36,000 vibrations per hour work out to 10 beats per second. Grand Seiko lists a mean daily rate of +5 to -3 seconds per day under controlled conditions before casing, and normal-use accuracy of +8 to -1 seconds per day. The two figures describe different conditions; the controlled mean rate should not be read as a promise of everyday performance. The SBGJ251 product page and the SBGJ249 product page provide the model specifications.
SBGE271 and SBGE269: Spring Drive
The SBGE models use automatic Spring Drive caliber 9R66, with 30 jewels and an approximate 72-hour reserve. Grand Seiko states accuracy of ±15 seconds per month, equivalent to ±1 second per day. The manufacturer also says the independently adjustable hour hand lets the wearer change local time while preserving precision. These are manufacturer specifications; the available information does not establish comparative real-world accuracy testing of these four watches.
#1 Best Overall
- 24-hour hand (dual time display function)
- Power Reserve Approx. 55 hours
- See-through case back
In practical terms, the movement decision is between the SBGJ pair’s mechanical rate specification and 55-hour reserve, and the SBGE pair’s Spring Drive specification and longer 72-hour reserve. The published material does not establish differences in service cost, durability, or owner preference.
Four seasonal dials, four design stories
SBGJ251 Shunbun: spring equinox
Grand Seiko connects Shunbun with the spring equinox and wild cherry trees flowering in mountain areas. The brand describes the dial as green and inspired by wild mountain cherry blossoms, with rose-gold-tone GMT accents. This is the manufacturer’s explanation of the design, rather than an independent interpretation of the dial.
Rank #2
- Comes with individual box
- 24 hour hand (dual time display function)
- Day difference + 45 to -35 seconds
- Mechanical automatic movement (with hand winding)
- Lasts approximately 41 hours on maximum winding
SBGJ249 Shōsho: early summer
Shōsho represents an early-summer phase after the rainy season. Grand Seiko evokes warm wind rippling lakes and ponds; the watch has a wave-pattern dial and a blue-steel GMT hand.
SBGE271 Kanro: autumn
Kanro takes its theme from autumn evenings drawing in and the chill of morning. The 2021 announcement also calls attention to Spring Drive’s glide-motion seconds hand, which moves silently.

Size, construction and water-resistance ratings
The dimensions are close, but not identical: the Hi-Beat pair measures 39.5 mm across and 14.1 mm thick; the Spring Drive pair is 40.2 mm across and 14.0 mm thick. The SBGJ251 product page lists a 46.9 mm lug-to-lug measurement and 19 mm band width; the SBGJ249 page also lists a 19 mm band width and the same overall SBGJ dimensions. Those figures can help when comparing published measurements, but they do not establish how a watch will fit an individual wrist or prove that a replacement strap or bracelet will fit.
Rank #4
- Three-fold clasp with push button release
- Dual-curved sapphire crystal
- Power reserve display on the back
- Power resrve Approx. 72 hours(3 days)
The stated water-resistance ratings are 3 bar for SBGJ251 and SBGJ249, and 10 bar for SBGE271 and SBGE269. A rating is a specification, not by itself a recommendation for a particular water activity. Grand Seiko’s 2021 announcement describes stainless-steel cases and bracelets, see-through case backs, box-shaped sapphire crystals with inner anti-reflective coating, 4,800 A/m magnetic resistance, and folding clasps with push-button release across the series.

Quick Recap
Which 4 Seasons GMT fits your priorities?
- Choose between the movements first: SBGJ251 and SBGJ249 share the 9S86 Hi-Beat movement; SBGE271 and SBGE269 share the 9R66 Spring Drive movement.
- Then choose the seasonal design: Shunbun is the green spring model, Shōsho the early-summer wave dial, Kanro the autumn watch, and Tōji the winter-solstice design.
- Compare the listed specifications that matter to you: the SBGJ pair is 39.5 mm and rated to 3 bar; the SBGE pair is 40.2 mm and rated to 10 bar. Wrist fit and activity suitability require more than these figures alone.
- Check the price in your market and at the time of purchase: the published US figures above take effect in November 2024, while the euro amounts are launch-era 2021 recommendations.
