Grand Seiko’s 9SA5 is a high-beat automatic movement introduced in 2020. It runs at 36,000 vibrations per hour (5 Hz), has an approximately 80-hour power reserve, and uses the brand’s Dual Impulse Escapement. Its headline engineering challenge is combining a fast beat with a long reserve and a slimmer movement profile.
What is the Grand Seiko 9SA5?
The 9SA5 is an automatic mechanical caliber that can also be wound by hand. Grand Seiko announced it on March 5, 2020, after a development effort the company described as nine years. The brand presented it as a new-generation high-beat movement designed to retain stable precision while extending power reserve and reducing thickness. Grand Seiko’s launch announcement introduced the caliber alongside a limited-edition watch; that release information is historical, not an indication of current availability.
At 36,000 vibrations per hour, the balance completes five oscillations per second. This frequency is commonly described as 5 Hz or 10 beats per second. The fast rate is central to the 9SA5’s identity, but the movement’s other design choices—including its escapement and twin barrels—are what Grand Seiko cites in explaining how it achieves a long reserve at that rate.

How the Dual Impulse Escapement works
An escapement meters energy from the mainspring to the balance, whose regular oscillations govern the movement’s timekeeping. In a conventional arrangement, the escape wheel delivers impulse to the balance through the pallet fork. Grand Seiko’s Dual Impulse Escapement uses two paths: the escape wheel gives impulse directly to the balance in one direction, and transfers it indirectly through the pallet fork in the other.
Grand Seiko says this arrangement improves energy-transfer efficiency. That is the manufacturer’s explanation of the design, rather than an independent comparative test result. The company also says the escapement’s pallet fork and escape wheel use MEMS-made parts. Its movement overview describes the caliber’s technical features.
How the 9SA5 gets approximately 80 hours of reserve
Grand Seiko attributes the combination of high frequency and approximately 80 hours of reserve to the movement’s twin barrels and the efficiency of the Dual Impulse Escapement. The twin barrels provide greater torque, according to the manufacturer, while the escapement is intended to use the stored energy efficiently. The reserve is approximate and depends on the mainspring being sufficiently wound.
The brand also describes a gear-train structure intended to reduce load on the front train and help protect component durability. These design explanations are useful context for the reserve figure: the 9SA5 is not simply a fast-beating caliber with an unusually large stated reserve, but a movement whose energy delivery and train are designed around that combination.

The 9SA5 uses a free-sprung balance rather than a regulator and, according to Grand Seiko, the company’s first overcoil hairspring in a 9S mechanical caliber. A free-sprung balance is adjusted by changing the balance’s moment of inertia rather than moving a regulator index along the hairspring. Grand Seiko says four recessed screws around the balance rim allow this adjustment.
The brand’s technical history of the caliber says the overcoil shape was selected after more than 80,000 simulations. Grand Seiko presents the hairspring and balance choices as supporting stable precision and durability; the simulation figure is the company’s account of its design process, not a published independent performance test.

Accuracy: stated rate versus performance on the wrist
Grand Seiko specifies a mean daily rate of -3 to +5 seconds per day for the 9SA5. This is a movement standard, not a promise that every watch will gain or lose within that band in every owner’s daily routine.
The official instructions distinguish the stated mean daily rate from normal-use accuracy. Grand Seiko gives a separate normal-use range of +8 to -1 seconds per day and notes that actual results can fall outside it depending on factors including wearing time, temperature, arm movement, shocks, and vibration. In practice, the rate observed on a wrist can therefore differ from the controlled specification.
Profile and instant date change
In its 2020 launch materials, Grand Seiko said the 9SA5 was 0.8 mm, or 15%, thinner than its existing high-beat caliber. The comparison is to that preceding Grand Seiko high-beat movement; it does not establish a single case thickness for every 9SA5-powered watch.

The movement also has an instant date-change system using a newly designed movable date finger. Grand Seiko describes the date as changing instantaneously and the mechanism as improving date-correction usability. The instructions refer to this feature as “Instant Date Change.”
A watch that uses the 9SA5
The Grand Seiko SLGH035 is one manufacturer-identified example powered by Caliber 9SA5. For this specific reference, Grand Seiko lists a 40.0 mm case diameter, 11.7 mm thickness, and 10-bar water resistance; it also describes the movement as running at 36,000 vibrations per hour with approximately 80 hours of reserve. Those dimensions and water-resistance details belong to the SLGH035, not to the caliber in general.
When comparing 9SA5 watches, use the movement as just one part of the decision. Check the reference-specific case size and thickness, dial and case materials, bracelet or strap, water resistance, price, and availability in your region. Those details vary by model and market; the caliber’s specifications do not establish a particular watch’s current price or stock status.
