The Grand Seiko 9SA5 stands out because it rethinks how a high-beat movement transfers energy to its balance. Its Dual Impulse Escapement sends an impulse directly from the escape wheel in one direction and through a pallet fork in the other. Grand Seiko pairs that design with twin barrels, a free-sprung balance, an overcoil hairspring and a thinner horizontal layout to specify 36,000 vibrations per hour and an 80-hour power reserve. Independent watchmaker Reuben Schoots calls the architecture a major step forward, while cautioning that it still involves sliding friction.
What makes the 9SA5 different?
Most mechanical watches use a lever escapement: the escape wheel transfers energy to the balance indirectly, through the pallet fork. The 9SA5 takes a mixed approach. Its escape wheel gives the balance a direct impulse in one direction, then delivers the impulse through the pallet fork in the other. Grand Seiko calls this arrangement the Dual Impulse Escapement.
An escapement has two essential jobs: meter energy from the mainspring and give the balance the impulses that keep it oscillating. Grand Seiko says the 9SA5’s arrangement transfers energy more efficiently. That is the company’s engineering explanation for how the movement can run at a high beat rate while delivering a long reserve; it is not, by itself, an independent head-to-head performance result.
The escape wheel and pallet fork are made using MEMS manufacturing, which Grand Seiko says enables the components’ precise shapes. The distinctive feature, however, is the route the impulse takes: one direct path and one through the lever.

Why the independent watchmaker sees a major advance—and a trade-off
In a November 1, 2020 Time+Tide article, independent watchmaker Reuben Schoots of Canberra, Australia, described the 9SA5 as perhaps the biggest step forward for Grand Seiko since its beginnings in 1960. Schoots is known for building a tourbillon pocket watch according to the George Daniels method, and he compared the broad idea of impulses in both directions with Daniels’s Co-Axial escapement.
His qualification is important: Schoots points out that the 9SA5’s impulse to the lever still involves sliding contact. In his assessment, the design reduces friction but does not eliminate it; deterioration of lubrication can still affect rate. This is Schoots’s technical interpretation, not a published laboratory comparison or a finding from testing across a sample of watches. The 9SA5 should therefore be described as a different impulse arrangement with an efficiency aim, not as friction-free.

How the escapement, barrels and high beat rate fit together
Grand Seiko introduced the 9SA5 in March 2020 with a specification of 36,000 vibrations per hour—10 beats per second—and an 80-hour power reserve. The company says the Dual Impulse Escapement’s efficiency, combined with twin barrels, makes that pairing possible. The reserve is a stated specification, not proof that every watch will deliver identical running time under every condition.
The same launch announcement gave a specified rate of +5 to -3 seconds per day. That is a manufacturer-stated figure, not a guarantee of what a particular owner will see in daily wear. Grand Seiko’s manual explains that a mechanical watch’s rate varies with factors including winding state, position, temperature and use, and distinguishes controlled mean-rate measurements from performance on the wrist.

What the balance and hairspring contribute
The 9SA5 uses a free-sprung balance rather than a conventional regulator. Four screws adjust the balance’s moment of inertia, changing its rate without moving a regulator to alter the effective length of the hairspring. Grand Seiko also describes a way to adjust isochronism—the consistency of rate as the mainspring unwinds—by rotating the hairspring stud.
The specially developed overcoil hairspring is another part of the design. Grand Seiko says its curve was selected after more than 80,000 simulations. That figure describes the company’s design process; it should not be confused with a measured accuracy result.

How the movement became thinner
The 9SA5 is not a new escapement fitted into an otherwise unchanged layout. Grand Seiko arranged the barrels and gear trains horizontally and repositioned the winding stem as part of a broader redesign. The company reported that the caliber is 0.8 mm, or 15%, thinner than the earlier Grand Seiko high-beat caliber it used as its comparison baseline. Those figures describe that specific manufacturer comparison, not a universal difference against every high-beat movement.
Grand Seiko also designed a faster date-change mechanism using a movable MEMS date finger. The bridges’ contours, according to the company, draw inspiration from Mount Iwate and a bend in the Shizukuishi River near its studio. These choices show that the caliber’s redesign extends beyond its escapement to packaging, calendar operation and appearance.
