Grand Seiko announced the SBGJ275 and SBGM253 on August 24, 2023, to mark 25 years of Calibre 9S. Both are GMT watches, but they take different approaches: the Sport Collection SBGJ275 is larger and rated to 20 bar, while the Elegance Collection SBGM253 is more compact and has a longer stated power reserve.
Two collections, two interpretations of a 9S GMT
The references were introduced together, but they are not simply different sizes of the same watch. The SBGJ275 is part of Grand Seiko’s Sport Collection and uses automatic Calibre 9S86. The SBGM253 belongs to the Elegance Collection and uses automatic Calibre 9S66. Their collection names describe distinct design approaches; they are not a universal ranking of which watch is better.
Grand Seiko described worldwide availability at its boutiques and select retail partners beginning in October 2023. That is the launch-era information in the August 24, 2023 announcement, not confirmation of current stock or availability in a particular country.

How the GMT function is intended to work
Grand Seiko says the local hour hand adjusts independently, allowing the wearer to change local time while travelling while the GMT hand continues to indicate a selected second time zone. In the announcement, the company describes this as a way to adjust local time while maintaining precision. This is the manufacturer’s description of the mechanism, not a claim about independently measured performance.
Which differences matter when choosing?
Case fit and presence
The SBGJ275 measures 44.2 mm across and 14.8 mm thick; the SBGM253 is 39.5 mm across and 13.7 mm thick. Those figures make the SBGJ275 the larger option on paper, while the SBGM253 has the more compact listed dimensions. Case measurements alone do not establish how either watch will fit a particular wrist.

Power reserve and movement frequency
The SBGM253’s stated 72-hour reserve exceeds the SBGJ275’s 55 hours. The SBGJ275’s 9S86 runs at 36,000 vibrations per hour, compared with 28,800 for the SBGM253’s 9S66. Both have the same manufacturer-stated mean daily rate of +5 to −3 seconds per day; these specifications should not be treated as a guarantee of an individual watch’s real-world rate.
Water-resistance ratings
Grand Seiko lists 20 bar for the SBGJ275 and 3 bar for the SBGM253. This is a substantial difference in the published ratings, but the figures alone are not a substitute for activity-specific guidance from the manufacturer. Consult Grand Seiko’s instructions for the watch and intended use rather than converting a pressure rating into an unqualified promise about suitable activities.
