The announcement describes the series as having two new manual-winding Spring Drive calibers, both with a glide-motion seconds hand that reflects the continuous flow of time. Grand Seiko’s UK announcement specifies 3 bar water resistance for the series; the Japanese release describes daily-life water resistance. SBGY002 and SBGY003: 9R31 in different case metals
The SBGY002 and SBGY003 share the 9R31 manual-winding caliber, 38.5 mm case diameter, 10.2 mm thickness, and approximately 72-hour stated power reserve. Their documented primary distinction is case material: 18K yellow gold for the SBGY002 and stainless steel for the SBGY003. Grand Seiko’s 2019 release identifies the SBGY003 as a 700-piece worldwide limited edition.
SBGZ001 and SBGZ003: platinum and 9R02
The official SBGZ references in the launch announcement are the platinum 950 SBGZ001 and SBGZ003. They use caliber 9R02, measure 38.5 mm across and 9.8 mm thick, and have a stated reserve of approximately 84 hours. The SBGZ001 was limited to 30 pieces worldwide; the release does not state a limited quantity for the SBGZ003. These details come from Grand Seiko’s 2019 Japanese announcement.
What separates the 9R31 and 9R02
Spring Drive uses the force of an unwinding mainspring to power the watch, while an IC and quartz oscillator regulate its accuracy. Its seconds hand moves in a continuous glide rather than advancing in discrete ticks. Grand Seiko says the 9R31 places two mainsprings in parallel in one barrel; the 9R02 adds a Torque Return System. The manufacturer’s stated reserve is approximately 72 hours for the 9R31 models and approximately 84 hours for the 9R02 models. These are published specifications, not results of independent testing.
