Standard versions use Sellita SW510-family movements; separate 2025 limited editions use restored vintage Valjoux 23 movements. What the Chronomaster is—and what the re-edition preserves
Nivada Grenchen’s official history dates the Chronomaster’s introduction to 1961 and describes it as a multi-purpose chronograph for air, sea, and land. That is the brand’s own historical framing. The modern re-edition carries forward the compact steel case, chronograph layout, and bezel with both a 60-minute scale and a 12-hour scale.
The scales serve different timing needs: the 60-minute markings can track elapsed time, while the 12-hour markings can help follow a second time zone. The dial adds a tachymeter scale and red regatta-countdown detail on cited versions. Together, those features make the watch visually busier than a conventional two-register chronograph, but they are also what give the Chronomaster its distinctive identity.
The bezel is bidirectional and continuously rotating, according to Monochrome Watches’ review of a standard re-edition (Monochrome Watches). It is a timing bezel, not a substitute for a dedicated dive watch’s unidirectional safety design.

Both are standard re-edition configurations, not different levels of the same movement. The sources support comparing the winding method and reported dimensions, but do not establish a universal price difference today.

Dial, lume, and strap choices depend on the reference
Coverage of the standard re-edition describes multiple dial and handset combinations, including black and panda-style designs, with cream or white luminous treatments. Leather, rubber, beads-of-rice bracelets, and Oyster-style bracelets have also appeared in reviewed or announced configurations. These options vary by reference and availability; do not assume every dial can be ordered with every bracelet.
Reviewed examples have a 20 mm lug width, making a 20 mm strap the sensible starting point. Fratello notes quick-release spring bars on the straps it examined, which may simplify strap changes without a spring-bar tool (Fratello). Before purchasing, confirm both the lug width and any bracelet-specific end-link or fit requirements for the exact reference.

The 2025 Valjoux 23 editions are a separate proposition
Hodinkee reported in May 2025 that Nivada Grenchen offered two limited Chronomaster versions using restored vintage Valjoux 23 VZ movements. The report specified 25 pieces of each design, a 38 mm by 12.95 mm steel case, and 100 m water resistance. It gave a preorder price of $5,000 for each version at that time (Hodinkee).
Those editions should not be confused with the standard SW510-family hand-wound and automatic re-editions. The Valjoux editions use restored vintage movements and were reported as limited runs; their 2025 preorder price does not establish current stock or present-day pricing.

Is the Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver worth buying?
It is a strong candidate if you specifically want a small-format, vintage-inspired chronograph with a distinctive multi-scale bezel, and you value choosing between manual and automatic winding. Its 100 m published rating and steel case make it a plausible everyday watch on paper, but a rating alone does not establish that a particular example is suitable for swimming or diving; condition, seals, and service history matter, especially for a pre-owned watch.
It is a less obvious choice if your priority is a thin, simple chronograph or a straightforward dive bezel. Published thickness varies by source and movement, while the bezel’s bidirectional rotation and dense dial favor the Chronomaster’s historical instrument look over minimalism. For a standard model, compare the exact reference, dial and lume, winding type, supplied strap or bracelet, and regional price at the time of purchase. Current price and stock are not established by the publication-era figures cited here.
