The Grand Seiko Omiwatari is reference SBGY007, an Elegance Collection watch with a hand-wound Spring Drive movement and a pale blue, textured dial inspired by winter ice on Lake Suwa in Japan.
What does Omiwatari mean?
Grand Seiko says the dial takes its inspiration from Lake Suwa, near the Shinshu Watch Studio where the brand makes Spring Drive watches. Its product description connects the ridges that can form across the frozen lake with the Omiwatari legend. The name refers to the traditional belief that the ridge is where the gods walk across the ice. This is the watchmaker’s design story, not a claim that the dial reproduces a particular year’s ice formation.

Grand Seiko’s official Australian product description says: “Most winters, the water of Lake Suwa freezes over and, most years, a long ridge appears in the ice from one side of the lake to the other.” It adds: “Tradition has it that this is the Omiwatari, or where the gods walk out over the ice.” The wording describes the tradition and the design inspiration.

The SBGY007 pairs a restrained dress-watch layout with the smooth-moving seconds hand associated with Spring Drive. Its movement is calibre 9R31, a manually wound Spring Drive calibre with a dual spring barrel. Grand Seiko specifies an approximately 72-hour power reserve at full winding and accuracy of ±15 seconds per month, equivalent to ±1 second per day. Those are manufacturer specifications, not results from an independent timing test.

What to know about size and everyday use
The 38.5 mm case diameter and 43.7 mm lug-to-lug measurement give more information about fit than diameter alone. The case is 10.2 mm thick, and the listed band width is 19 mm. Actual wrist fit depends on wrist shape and personal preference; the measurements alone do not establish comfort.

Water-resistance wording varies by regional listing: Grand Seiko Australia calls the SBGY007 splash resistant, while its Japanese listing describes daily-life water resistance. Neither supports treating it as a swimming or diving watch. For use around water, follow the guidance for the specific region and watch supplied by Grand Seiko.
What does the SBGY007 cost?
There is no single worldwide price. Grand Seiko America’s notice dated October 31, 2024 lists USD 8,300 before the adjustment and USD 8,400 effective November 1, 2024. That is a historical U.S. price notice, not confirmation of today’s price. Regional listings also showed £7,800 at the UK boutique and ¥1,155,000 including tax in Japan when crawled. These figures are tied to different markets and listing dates, so they should not be treated as directly comparable current quotes.
