The SBGH277 has a silvery-white sunburst dial, while the SBGH279 has a brushed grey dial. Both are 40 mm stainless-steel watches in a 44GS-style case, but their reported 13.3 mm thickness is worth considering if you want a slim daily wearer.
What is the difference between the Grand Seiko SBGH277 and SBGH279?
In Fratello’s May 26, 2020 hands-on review, the primary distinction is dial finish and color. The SBGH277 is described as silvery white with a sunburst finish; the SBGH279 has a brushed grey dial. The article otherwise presents them with the same core specifications, so the choice is chiefly about which dial you prefer.

Fratello characterizes the case as 44GS style. That describes a design influence; these are not the original 1967 44GS watches, and the review notes that the contemporary case is not identical to the original.
What does the 9S85 movement offer?
Grand Seiko’s official caliber 9S85 specifications list self-winding with manual winding, 36,000 vibrations per hour (5 Hz), 37 jewels and approximately 55 hours of power reserve. The manufacturer also publishes a mean daily rate of +5 to -3 seconds per day. That is a controlled mean-rate specification, not a promise that every individual watch will keep that rate on every wearer’s wrist in everyday use.

Is the Grand Seiko SBGH277 a good everyday watch?
It can be a serious everyday-wear candidate if you like its dial and the case feels comfortable on your wrist. Fratello’s reviewer, Robert-Jan Broer, praised the case finishing and considered the watches suitable for regular wear, while identifying the 13.3 mm thickness as a possible drawback. Whether that height works for you depends on your wrist, clothing cuffs and preference for a more substantial watch; try it on if you can, rather than treating diameter alone as a fit test.
The review’s 100 m / 10 ATM rating is a reported specification for these references in that 2020 article. It does not, by itself, settle how a particular used watch should be treated: condition, servicing and the integrity of its seals matter. For a pre-owned example, ask about its service history and whether its water resistance has been checked.

What should you check before choosing one?
- Dial preference: compare the silvery sunburst SBGH277 with the brushed grey SBGH279 in person or in reliable photographs, since lighting can change how either finish appears.
- Fit: assess the 40 mm diameter and 13.3 mm thickness together, including how the watch sits beneath a cuff.
- Specific watch and seller: verify the exact reference, condition, bracelet and clasp condition, warranty terms and any service documentation.
- Current price and availability: check with current sellers. Fratello listed €6,200 as the retail price in its May 26, 2020 article; that historical figure is not a current price or evidence of present availability.
