The Grand Seiko SBGH289 is one specific 200 m dive watch; OMEGA Planet Ocean is a collection, not a single model. There is no fair one-to-one verdict until you choose a Planet Ocean reference and generation. The SBGH289’s dimensions and specifications are clear, while Planet Ocean specifications vary substantially: for example, an older 42 mm Planet Ocean 600M reference is rated to 600 m, and the Worldtimer is 45.50 mm. Compare the exact reference you are considering before deciding which fits your needs.
First, define which Planet Ocean you mean
OMEGA introduced the fourth-generation Planet Ocean redesign on 18 November 2025. The announcement covers seven models, three different watch heads, and multiple bracelet or strap options—not one set of specifications that applies to every Planet Ocean. See OMEGA’s fourth-generation announcement for the collection-level scope.

Two examples show why the reference matters. OMEGA’s manual for reference 217.32.42.21.01.001 describes a 42 mm Planet Ocean 600M with a titanium-steel case, rubber strap, 600 m water resistance, and automatic caliber 8912 with a 60-hour power reserve. Separately, OMEGA’s March 2025 Worldtimer release lists a 45.50 mm case and 600 m water resistance for the Worldtimer models it describes. Neither example should be treated as the specification of every Planet Ocean.

Movement accuracy: read the figures on their own terms
Grand Seiko SBGH289
Grand Seiko lists Caliber 9S85’s mean daily rate as +5 to −3 seconds per day under the manufacturer’s stated controlled measurement conditions. It separately lists normal-use accuracy of +8 to −1 seconds per day. These are distinct manufacturer specifications, not a promise that every individual watch will produce those results on every wearer’s wrist.
Planet Ocean
The cited OMEGA manual specifies caliber 8912 and a 60-hour reserve for reference 217.32.42.21.01.001; the cited Worldtimer release names caliber 8938. The sources cited here do not establish a directly comparable accuracy figure for those Planet Ocean references. Check the documentation for the exact model rather than assuming the entire collection shares one movement specification.

Diving functions and dial visibility
SBGH289
Grand Seiko specifies a screw-down crown, one-way rotating bezel, and LumiBrite on the hands, indexes, and bezel. Its product page describes the dial as dark blue. Those features, together with the 200 m rating, define the SBGH289’s dive-watch specification.
Planet Ocean
Planet Ocean includes 600 m-rated examples, but collection-level naming does not establish the water-resistance rating or bezel details of a particular watch. Confirm the rating, bezel operation, and luminous elements on the reference-specific product page or manual for the model you plan to buy. A higher stated depth rating alone does not tell you which watch’s size, functions, or design best suits your use.

How to choose between them
Start with the actual reference and generation
Write down the full Planet Ocean reference number and whether it is from the 2025 fourth-generation redesign or another generation. Then compare that watch—not the collection name—with the SBGH289. If you have not selected a reference, you are comparing one defined Grand Seiko against a range of OMEGA watches.
Check wrist fit using more than diameter
The SBGH289 measures 43.8 mm across and 51.0 mm lug-to-lug, with a thickness of 14.7 mm and listed weight of 206 g. Diameter alone cannot settle fit: lug-to-lug length, thickness, case shape, strap or bracelet, and the shape of your wrist all matter. The cited Planet Ocean examples have different diameters, and the cited sources do not give their lug-to-lug or thickness measurements. Try the exact watches on in person where possible; specifications cannot establish which will feel more comfortable on your wrist.
Match specifications to your use
- Choose the SBGH289 if its specific combination of a 200 m rating, dark-blue dial, 9S85 movement, and stated dimensions is what you want.
- Consider a Planet Ocean if a particular reference’s materials, movement, functions, or water-resistance rating suit your priorities. Check the exact reference because those details vary across the collection.
- Compare current prices only after choosing the exact Planet Ocean reference and the same market or region. The cited sources do not establish like-for-like current prices for the watches.
What this comparison can—and cannot—settle
The SBGH289’s manufacturer specifications define a single watch clearly. Planet Ocean’s collection name does not identify a single set of dimensions or features, so a strict winner on size, movement, rating, or value cannot be named without a specific OMEGA reference, generation, region, and price. OMEGA CEO Raynald Aeschlimann called the collection a reflection of the brand’s “pioneering and innovative spirit” in the company’s December 2025 anniversary coverage; that is brand commentary, not independent comparative evidence.
