The key differences are their dials and edition status: the blue-purple SBGJ261 is a US limited edition of 500, while the green SBGJ259 is designated a US Special Edition. Grand Seiko’s US site displays the SBGJ259 at $7,700; the $6,800 figure attached to both models is their September 2022 launch price, not a confirmed current price.

The shared specification set is unusually close: both are 44GS-profile watches built around the same high-frequency GMT movement. The choice is mainly aesthetic, unless the SBGJ261’s stated 500-piece limit is decisive. Monochrome Watches’ September 2022 launch report covers both references; Grand Seiko’s SBGJ259 page supplies current US specifications and its displayed price.
Is the SBGJ261 limited edition?
Yes. Grand Seiko’s boutique listing and Monochrome’s launch coverage identify the SBGJ261 as a US limited edition of 500 pieces. By contrast, Grand Seiko describes the SBGJ259 as a US Special Edition and does not state a production quantity on its current US product page. “Special Edition” should not be read as proof of a specific numbered run.
The two watches were introduced for US availability in September 2022 through Grand Seiko Boutiques and selected US retail partners. That launch geography and channel description do not establish present inventory or whether either reference can still be purchased new.

What is the Grand Seiko SBGJ259 price?
As displayed on Grand Seiko’s US product page accessed October 8, 2026, the SBGJ259 is priced at $7,700. Monochrome reported a launch price of $6,800 for each watch in September 2022. These are different dated figures; the older launch price should not be treated as today’s price.
The SBGJ261 boutique listing displays $6,800, but that page does not verify a current manufacturer price or live stock. Check directly with Grand Seiko or an authorized retailer for current availability and pricing. The evidence available here does not establish a current SBGJ261 price.

How the Caliber 9S86 GMT works
Caliber 9S86 is a self-winding movement with manual winding and a 24-hour GMT hand. That hand can indicate a second time zone while the conventional local hour hand is adjusted in one-hour increments. The SBGJ259 feature list specifies calendar-linked time-difference adjustment, useful when changing local time without giving up the second-zone indication. Launch coverage identifies the movement as running at 36,000 beats per hour; Grand Seiko lists approximately 55 hours of power reserve for the SBGJ259.
Grand Seiko gives two accuracy figures for the SBGJ259: a mean daily rate of +5 to −3 seconds per day under controlled measurement conditions, and normal-use accuracy of +8 to −1 seconds per day. These are separate specifications, not interchangeable promises about every watch in everyday wear.

Case, crystal, and practical specifications
Grand Seiko’s current US SBGJ259 page lists a stainless-steel case measuring 40.0 mm across, 46.2 mm from lug to lug and 14.0 mm thick. It has a dual-curved sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on the inner surface, a see-through screw case back, 19 mm band width and a folding clasp with push-button release.
- Water resistance: 10 bar on Grand Seiko’s SBGJ259 page; 2022 launch coverage describes the pair as 100 m water-resistant.
- Magnetic resistance: 4,800 A/m.
- Crown: screw-down.
- Jewels: 37.
The manufacturer’s 10-bar specification is the clearest reference for the SBGJ259. Although 10 bar and 100 m are often presented as equivalent ratings, a water-resistance rating alone does not describe every real-world exposure or use condition.

Where these watches sit in the 44GS design lineage
Grand Seiko says, “The original 44GS, born in 1967, defined the Grand Seiko Style.” The SBGJ261 and SBGJ259 draw on that design language rather than being the original 1967 watch. Grand Seiko highlights broad mirror-polished surfaces, sharp ridgelines, faceted indexes and angular hands in its 44GS collection history. Those facets create contrasting reflections and help keep the dial’s markers and hands visually distinct.
