Grand Seiko SBGR077 and SBGR079: Hands-On Review of the 80,000 A/m Watches

The SBGR077 and SBGR079 pair Grand Seiko finishing and Caliber 9S65 with reported 80,000 A/m magnetic resistance. Here are the design, dimensions and used-watch checks that matter.

The Grand Seiko SBGR077 and SBGR079 are related automatic date watches built around a practical distinction: historical reports give them magnetic resistance of 80,000 A/m, alongside a 41 mm case, 15.3 mm thickness and 10 bar water resistance. Their soft-iron shielding adds meaningful bulk, while luminous details and a screw-down crown give them a more tool-oriented character than many dressier Grand Seiko models. These are historic references; current production status, availability and prices have not been verified.

What are the SBGR077 and SBGR079?

They are related Grand Seiko mechanical watches powered by the automatic Caliber 9S65, with a date display. A 2013 report on the strengthened anti-magnetic models lists both references and gives the mechanical versions a magnetic-resistance rating of 80,000 A/m. The same report lists a 41.0 mm case diameter, 15.3 mm thickness and 10 bar water resistance. Gressive’s 2013 Good Design Award report records these model details.

The historical hands-on review treats the pair as closely related in their practical design and movement. The sources do not establish a definitive reference-by-reference feature difference, so buyers should verify the exact reference and configuration on any individual watch rather than infer differences from the model numbers alone.

How does the magnetic protection work?

Historical accounts describe a soft-iron shield around the movement, using components that include the dial, middle case and an anti-magnetic inner case. The intent is to direct magnetic flux away from the movement. A 2013 designer account describes pure iron enclosing the movement; a 2019 feature discusses the selection of rolled soft iron for the shield. webChronos’s 2019 explanation also says the design team tested at finer magnetic-field angles than the general standard described in that article. That is the publication’s description of the approach, not an independent certification of the test result.

The date opening had to be considered in the design. Seiko Instruments development engineer Haruki Hiranuma told webChronos, “Even with a date window in the dial, magnetic resistance did not change much.” The reported 80,000 A/m rating applies to the watch design as a whole, including its date display; the source does not provide a separate numerical rating for the aperture.

What does the hands-on review say about wearing them?

The reviewer at The Dive Watch Connection describes a blend of practical and refined details: luminous hands and markers, a screw-down crown and flat sapphire crystal alongside applied indices and Grand Seiko dial finishing. The review also notes anti-reflective treatment on the crystal’s inner surface and 100 m water resistance, equivalent to the 10 bar rating reported in the 2013 account. These are the reviewer’s observations, not a universal judgment about how the watches look or feel.

At 15.3 mm thick, they have more height than many conventional Grand Seiko watches. The hands-on reviewer attributes that added thickness to the anti-magnetic construction and reports substantial wrist presence. That may be a worthwhile trade for the shielding and robust specification, but fit depends on the wearer, wrist and bracelet adjustment; try a specific example if possible.

Weight figures should not be treated as a direct comparison: The Dive Watch Connection reports 192 g for the SBGR077, while webChronos gives an actual measurement of 152 g for an SBGR079. The references and measurement contexts differ, and neither figure guarantees the weight of every watch or bracelet configuration.

What does Caliber 9S65 offer?

Grand Seiko’s current caliber specifications describe the 9S65 as self-winding with manual winding, a date display and hacking seconds. It runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), has 35 jewels and provides approximately 72 hours of power reserve. These are caliber-level specifications, not a condition report for a particular SBGR077 or SBGR079. Grand Seiko’s Caliber 9S65 page lists the current specifications.

Grand Seiko gives two accuracy measures: a mean daily rate of +5 to -3 seconds per day, measured under controlled conditions, and normal-usage accuracy of +10 to -1 seconds per day. They are different measures, not competing guarantees for every pre-owned watch. Age, condition and service can affect an individual example’s performance. The 9S65 family instruction guide is useful for owners seeking operating guidance.

What should you check when considering one?

Because these are historic references and current stock and pricing are unverified, assess the particular watch rather than relying on a model description alone. Check:

  • Reference and documentation: Confirm whether the watch is an SBGR077 or SBGR079 and review any available provenance and seller documentation.
  • Condition and service: Ask about service history and have the watch inspected if its condition or timekeeping is uncertain. A caliber specification does not establish the performance of an individual used watch.
  • Bracelet and fit: Check sizing, adjustment range, condition and completeness, and consider the 15.3 mm case height on your own wrist.
  • Configuration: Verify the actual bracelet, weight and condition of the example; published weight measurements vary by reference and context.
  • Practical preferences: Decide whether you want the date, luminous markers, 10 bar water resistance and reported magnetic protection, and whether the thicker case suits your use.

For a broader explanation of care and service, consult Grand Seiko’s regional support resources; service arrangements depend on location and should be confirmed with the brand or an authorized provider.
