Seiko Watch Corporation called it a modern reinterpretation—not a replica—when it announced the 968-piece limited edition in 2017.
How does the SBGR305 reinterpret the 1960 Grand Seiko?
Grand Seiko frames the SBGR305 as a connection between the pioneering spirit of its 1960 watch and the character of contemporary Grand Seiko. That is the manufacturer’s design interpretation; it does not mean the later watch reproduces the original in every detail. The SBGR305 adds modern specifications and a date display, with an exhibition caseback that reveals its movement.

What does the 9S68 movement add?
The automatic 9S68 runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour and has a stated 72-hour power reserve. Grand Seiko also specifies static accuracy of -3 to +5 seconds per day. Those figures are the company’s specifications, not a guarantee that every watch will show the same accuracy in daily use. The manufacturer says the movement allows a larger date window, making the date display part of the SBGR305’s practical update to the earlier design.
How large is it, and what is the case made of?
The titanium case measures 40.5 mm across and 13.6 mm thick. The manufacturer names the material Brilliant Hard Titanium and pairs it with a dual-curved sapphire crystal. These dimensions describe the watch on paper; how it wears also depends on the wearer’s wrist and the strap fit.

How limited was the SBGR305, and when did it launch?
Seiko Watch Corporation announced the watch on March 23, 2017, as a limited edition of 968 pieces. Its English announcement said it would be available from July 2017; that regional release timing should not be read as a universal date for every market. The production figure does not indicate how many are currently offered for sale.

| Source and context | Reported launch-era figure |
|---|---|
| Seiko Watch Corporation, approximate European recommended retail price, 2017 | €8,800 |
| Hodinkee, launch introduction, 2017 | $7,200 |
Hodinkee’s 2017 launch introduction supplies the dollar figure. Neither launch price establishes today’s asking price or resale value.
Is the SBGR305 still available?
The edition was limited to 968 pieces, but that number does not establish present-day stock. The 2017 announcement and launch coverage do not verify current inventory, resale pricing, seller identity, or the condition and provenance of any particular watch. If you find an example, assess those details individually rather than treating a historical launch price or the edition count as evidence of its current value.
