The Grand Seiko SBGW257 and SBGW259 recreate the brand’s 1960 first watch, but make different choices in material and appearance: the SBGW257 pairs a platinum 950 case with gold dial details, while the SBGW259 uses Brilliant Hard Titanium with a blue dial. Their manual-winding movement and principal dimensions are shared. The meaningful decision is whether the platinum model’s precious-metal case is worth its much higher historical launch price—or whether the lighter, harder titanium case better suits your priorities.

SBGW257: platinum and gold accents
The SBGW257 has a platinum 950 case and gold dial details. Those precious-metal choices give this version a different material and color character from its titanium counterpart. Its approximate European recommended retail price at launch was €39,000, according to Grand Seiko’s 2020 announcement.
SBGW259: blue dial and Brilliant Hard Titanium
The SBGW259 combines a blue dial with Brilliant Hard Titanium. Grand Seiko describes this material as exclusive to the brand, as light as pure titanium and twice as hard as stainless steel. These are the manufacturer’s comparisons; they do not establish how the watch will feel or wear for every owner. Its approximate European launch price was €8,300.

A re-creation of Grand Seiko’s first watch
Grand Seiko places both references in its series of re-creations based on the first Grand Seiko, introduced in 1960. The brand says the case shape, softly curved dial and hands remain faithful to the original, while the case back is now sapphire so the movement can be seen. The official collection page gives the broader context for the series.
This shared historical basis matters to the comparison: the SBGW257 and SBGW259 are not different movement or size variants. They are two material and dial interpretations of the same design idea.

The brand says the caliber’s duration improved from about 50 hours to about 72 hours to achieve more stable accuracy. These figures describe the maker’s stated specifications, not a guarantee of an individual watch’s observed performance.

Which one makes more sense for you?
Choose the SBGW257 if platinum is the point
The SBGW257 is the choice for someone specifically seeking a platinum 950 case and gold dial details in this 1960-inspired design. Its historical European launch price was far above the titanium model’s, so the decision is best understood as a preference for those materials rather than a way to gain a different movement or larger case.
Choose the SBGW259 if you prefer titanium
The SBGW259 offers the same stated movement and core dimensions in Brilliant Hard Titanium, with a blue dial and a substantially lower historical European launch price. Grand Seiko’s claims about titanium’s lightness and hardness may make the material appealing, but the specifications alone cannot settle personal questions such as how it wears on your wrist.

What the published figures cannot tell you
These specifications do not establish comparative wrist comfort, actual weight, clasp feel, legibility in changing light, or how either finish looks in person. They also do not establish current stock or current asking prices. Treat retailer or resale listings as separate, time-sensitive information rather than assuming the 2020 launch prices still apply.
