watchOS 10.5 was a modest maintenance update released on May 13, 2024. Its only named user-facing addition was the Pride Radiance watch face. Apple also bundled general improvements, bug fixes, and a broad set of security updates. It did not introduce a new health sensor, major interface redesign, or feature expansion on the scale of the original watchOS 10 release.
Because later watchOS versions are now available, watchOS 10.5 is a historical release rather than the current Apple Watch software. It remains relevant when checking an older Apple Watch’s update history, compatibility, or security-patch level.

| Release date | May 13, 2024 |
| Named consumer feature | Pride Radiance watch face |
| Other changes | Improvements, bug fixes, and security fixes |
| Broad compatibility context | Apple Watch Series 4 and later, within the watchOS 10 compatibility family |

The main new feature: Pride Radiance
The headline addition in watchOS 10.5 was the Pride Radiance watch face. Apple described it as honoring LGBTQ+ community and culture.
For Apple Watch owners, this is primarily a personalization update. It does not change how watchOS navigation works and does not add a new health, fitness, communications, or safety capability. The face is a new way to customize the watch’s appearance, not a new watchOS platform feature.
If you already own a compatible Apple Watch, installing watchOS 10.5 is what makes the face available; buying a new watch is not required simply to use it. A band is also not included with the update or required for the face.

What Apple did—and did not—say about improvements
Apple’s consumer-facing release note describes the rest of watchOS 10.5 broadly as improvements and bug fixes. Apple did not provide a detailed public list of individual user-facing fixes in that summary.
That means it would be inaccurate to promise a particular battery-life increase, faster performance, better workout tracking, or improved reliability based solely on the release note. Those effects can vary by Apple Watch model and by the problem an individual user was experiencing. The defensible summary is that watchOS 10.5 was a maintenance release with general fixes, rather than a feature-scale upgrade.
Security fixes in watchOS 10.5
The security content was more substantial than the short consumer summary might suggest. Apple’s security bulletin for watchOS 10.5 lists fixes across many system components, including:
Recommended Free Tools
- AppleAVD
- AppleMobileFileIntegrity
- Core Data
- Kernel
- Maps
- Messages
- Phone
- Shortcuts
- Spotlight
- Transparency
- Several WebKit components
The listed impacts varied. Depending on the vulnerability and the conditions required to exploit it, a successful attack could cause an app to crash, expose data without authorization, escalate privileges, or execute arbitrary code. These descriptions explain why security updates matter; they do not mean that ordinary Apple Watch owners were known to have been compromised.

Which Apple Watch models were covered?
Many of the security entries applied to Apple Watch Series 4 and later. However, the bulletin did not give every issue identical hardware scope. One Apple Neural Engine issue applied to devices equipped with that engine—Apple specifically identified Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 for that entry.
Therefore, “watchOS 10.5 fixed security issues for Series 4 and later” is a useful broad description, but it should not be interpreted as meaning that every vulnerability affected every model in that range.
Compatibility: who could install watchOS 10.5?
watchOS 10 was introduced for Apple Watch Series 4 and later when paired with an iPhone XS or later running iOS 17. watchOS 10.5 belongs to that same general compatibility generation.

A Series 4 or newer watch may still fail to update if the paired iPhone is too old or is not running the required iOS version. Individual security fixes can also have narrower hardware requirements than the overall operating-system update.

If you are deciding whether older hardware needs to be replaced, watchOS 10.5 itself did not require a new Apple Watch. Check the exact model and paired iPhone combination first.
Developer notes: watchOS 10.5 SDK and StoreKit fixes
For developers, the watchOS 10.5 SDK shipped with Xcode 15.4. Apple’s developer release notes recorded two resolved StoreKit problems:
SubscriptionStoreViewcould crash when a user tapped its Terms of Service button.ExternalPurchaseLink.open()could fail to open an external purchase URL.
These are development and app-behavior fixes, not new Apple Watch features that consumers would see in the watchOS interface. They matter to developers testing or shipping watchOS apps with the Xcode 15.4 SDK.

If your goal is to bring an older watch up to the latest version supported by its hardware, use Apple’s normal software-update process rather than looking specifically for watchOS 10.5.

Before troubleshooting, confirm that the watch and paired iPhone meet the compatibility requirements, that both devices have sufficient charge, and that the iPhone is running a compatible iOS release. If watchOS 10.5 is not offered, the watch may already be on a later version, the iPhone may not meet the pairing requirement, or the watch may not support that software generation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is watchOS 10.5 still current?
No. Apple’s security-release index now lists later watchOS versions, including watchOS 26.5 as the current version identified in the research record. The exact version offered to a particular watch still depends on its model, paired iPhone, region, and Apple’s compatibility requirements.

Use watchOS 10.5 as a historical reference point, not as the version to seek out on a currently supported device. If your Apple Watch can install a later compatible release, that later release is generally the more relevant update because it includes newer feature and security work.
How watchOS 10.5 compares with the original watchOS 10 release
It is easy to attribute watchOS 10 launch features to watchOS 10.5, but the two releases had different purposes.

The original watchOS 10 rollout introduced larger changes such as redesigned apps, the Smart Stack, new watch faces, cycling and hiking features, and mental-health tools. watchOS 10.5 arrived later as a point update. Its named consumer addition was Pride Radiance, while the rest of Apple’s public summary covered improvements, bug fixes, and security content.
So the accurate expectation is simple: watchOS 10.5 maintained and secured the watchOS 10 experience; it did not substantially redesign it.
