The Grand Seiko Heritage 44GS SBGW289 is a 36.5 mm hand-wound limited edition with a Sakura-kakushi dial inspired by cherry blossoms and lingering snow in northern Japan. Grand Seiko introduced it in 2022 as a 1,200-piece worldwide edition. Its official US boutique page lists $5,400 but marks the watch “No Longer Available”; a separate $4,950 pre-owned listing was reported sold or removed in July 2026, so neither figure establishes a current offer or market value.
What is the Grand Seiko SBGW289?
Grand Seiko introduced the SBGW289 on April 12, 2022, as a Heritage Collection 44GS 55th Anniversary limited edition. Production was capped at 1,200 pieces worldwide. The model brings the 44GS design language to a compact manual-winding watch rather than introducing a new case concept.

The original 44GS dates to 1967. Grand Seiko says it embodied the “Grand Seiko Style,” a design code built around nine principles. On the SBGW289, the brand describes the case as retaining the 44GS’s flat surfaces and sharp angles while pairing them with the slim hand-wound Caliber 9S64. The brand also says the case is Zaratsu polished by hand and the movement is assembled by hand at Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi; these are manufacturer descriptions, not independent observations.
Why is the dial called Sakura-kakushi?
Grand Seiko describes Sakura-kakushi as a brief spring moment in northern Japan when snow and cherry blossoms coexist. It characterizes the dial as delicate pink with a slight silver hue. The name and color are tied to that seasonal image rather than to a generic pink-dial treatment.
#1 Best Overall
- See-through case back
- Date display
- Screw-down crown
- 40mm Diameter
- Weight 178.0 g
The description conveys the intended inspiration, but the available specifications do not quantify the dial’s color or texture. Lighting and display settings can affect how a pale pink-and-silver tone appears in photographs, so images alone should not be treated as a definitive color reference.

How does the 36.5 mm case size translate on paper?
The 36.5 mm diameter places the SBGW289 in a smaller-case category than many contemporary sports watches, while its 42.7 mm lug-to-lug measurement from Kamine gives a second useful dimension for comparing it with a wearer’s existing watches. Its listed thickness is 11.6 mm. These measurements help frame the proportions, but they cannot establish how the watch will fit a particular wrist; that depends on wrist shape, bracelet sizing and personal preference.
The stainless-steel bracelet and box-shaped sapphire are part of the published specification. Grand Seiko gives 10 bar water resistance, but that rating should not be mistaken for a substitute for checking the watch’s condition and seals on an individual pre-owned example.

What does the hand-wound 9S64 offer?
The Caliber 9S64 is manually wound, beats at 28,880 vibrations per hour and has 24 jewels. Grand Seiko states a 72-hour power reserve, meaning the stated reserve is three days when fully wound. The published mean daily rate is +5 to -3 seconds per day.

Kamine separately lists a “wearable accuracy” range of +10 to -1 seconds per day. These are two differently labeled figures from different sources; neither is an independent timekeeping test of an individual SBGW289. A used watch’s actual performance cannot be inferred from the published range alone.
Grand Seiko SBGW289 price and availability
| Price reference | What it represents |
|---|---|
| $5,400 USD | Price displayed on Grand Seiko’s US boutique page, accessed October 8, 2026. The page marks the model “No Longer Available”; this is a listed price, not evidence of current stock or a current retail offer. |
| $4,950 USD, negotiable | Asking price for one used 2022 example with box and papers in a Shreve, Crump & Low listing represented through EveryWatch. The listing was shown sold or removed in July 2026; this is not a verified transaction price, current offer or market average. |
Kamine’s Japanese retailer page also says the model is no longer handled and notes that catalog products may be sold out or discontinued. Taken together, these pages indicate that the SBGW289 is not presented as an ordinary current boutique model in those listings. They do not prove that every authorized dealer worldwide is out of new-old-stock inventory.
Rank #3
- 24-hour hand (dual time display function)
- Power Reserve Approx. 55 hours
- See-through case back
The Japan listing says 150 of the 1,200 worldwide pieces were allocated to Japan. That is Kamine’s regional allocation information, not a figure stated in Grand Seiko’s global press release. Availability, asking prices and local taxes can vary by region and seller; the two dollar amounts above should not be read as a global price range.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.SBGW289 or SBGW291?
Grand Seiko’s Middle East page presents the SBGW291 as a 36.5 mm modern interpretation of the 44GS, with a silver sunray dial. That makes it a useful design reference if the SBGW289 is difficult to source, but it is not a direct substitute for the limited Sakura-kakushi dial. The SBGW291 page lists $5,300 USD for that region; it is not a current US price.
