The Grand Seiko SBGW291 and SBGW293 are compact, manually wound interpretations of the brand’s 44GS design. Both measure 36.5 mm across, with the same 42.7 mm case length and 11.6 mm thickness; their most apparent distinction is the dial: silver on the SBGW291 and dark brown on the SBGW293. They also share Calibre 9S64 and an approximately 72-hour power reserve.
What is different between the SBGW291 and SBGW293?
The key difference in the official specifications is dial appearance. Grand Seiko describes the SBGW291’s dial as silver with a sunray pattern, while the SBGW293 has a dark brown sunray-pattern dial. The SBGW293 listing also describes faceted hands and indexes and a brown crocodile strap.

These are manufacturer specifications, not a side-by-side independent assessment of how the dials look in different lighting or on the wrist. For the SBGW291, see Grand Seiko’s official product page; the SBGW293 is listed by Grand Seiko Boutique Online Japan and the Grand Seiko Official Boutique US.
How do the case sizes compare?
They do not differ on the listed dimensions: both are 36.5 mm in diameter, 42.7 mm in length, and 11.6 mm thick. That makes their stated proportions directly comparable, but measurements alone cannot guarantee how either will fit a particular wrist. Grand Seiko lists an 18 mm band width for both. Its Japanese boutique specifications give each a weight of 66 g.

What movement do the watches use?
Both references use Grand Seiko’s manually wound mechanical Calibre 9S64, with an approximately 72-hour power reserve. Manual winding is part of the movement’s ordinary operation; the shared calibre and reserve mean neither model has a specification advantage on those points.
Understanding the accuracy figures
Grand Seiko publishes two different accuracy specifications for each watch. The mean daily rate is +5 to -3 seconds per day, measured on the movement before casing under controlled conditions. The stated normal-use accuracy is +10 to -1 seconds per day and is subject to wearing conditions. The brand notes that actual performance can vary with factors including temperature, movement, and shock, so the controlled mean-rate figure should not be read as a guarantee of everyday timekeeping.

What else is specified?
Grand Seiko lists a box-shaped sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating on the inner surface and 10 bar water resistance for both references. These are the manufacturer’s stated specifications; the figures do not establish suitability for every activity or use condition.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which one should you choose?
Choose based on the dial and the overall look you prefer: the SBGW291’s silver sunray finish or the SBGW293’s dark brown sunray finish. Since the listed dimensions and movement specifications match, those figures do not point to a fit or mechanical distinction between them. The SBGW293’s official US boutique result showed a price of $5,300 and out-of-stock status when indexed; that regional snapshot is not a current global price or availability guarantee.
