Japanese independent watchmaking drew unusual attention in 2022 through both national craft recognition and a run of visible releases. Hajime Asaoka was named a Contemporary Master Craftsman, while his Kurono Tokyo label introduced distinctive limited models and earned a finalist place at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG). Naoya Hida & Co. also announced a new creation under an application system that reflected constrained supply. These milestones make 2022 a notable year for the scene, but they do not establish a market-wide boom or growth rate.
Recognition put Hajime Asaoka in the spotlight
Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare named Hajime Asaoka a Gendai no Meiko—Contemporary Master Craftsman—in 2022, according to Kurono Tokyo’s profile of Asaoka. He had been a member of the Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants (AHCI) since 2015. The government distinction recognized his craft; it was separate from the attention his watches received at industry awards.
Kurono Tokyo made the year visible through three releases
Grand Mori put handmade urushi at the center
Kurono’s 2022 Anniversary Grand Mori paired a handmade urushi lacquer dial with a gold-gilded-color dial base and a Miyota 90S5 automatic movement. In its official launch page, the brand said orders would open on 27 May 2022 at 11 p.m. Japan Standard Time. The page lists a 20 mm lug width and a 40-hour power reserve and now marks the release sold out. The order window and availability are historical, not an indication that the watch can currently be purchased new.
The 34mm offered a smaller case in four colors
Kurono Bunkyō Tokyo announced the 34mm in four colors, with 80 watches per color. The 34 mm case housed a Miyota 90S5 automatic movement. The AJHH release listing gives 21 July 2022 as its launch date and ¥150,000 as the launch price. That figure is the historical listed price, not a current quote.

Calendrier Type I reached the GPHG finalist list
Kurono’s Calendrier Type I, a triple-calendar watch, was a finalist in the 2022 GPHG awards. Finalist status is a meaningful mark of visibility, but it is not a win.
Naoya Hida & Co. showed how tight access could be
Naoya Hida & Co. announced its “2022 new creation” on 12 May 2022. Rather than offer a simple open order window, the brand used separate application periods for existing owners and first-time buyers. It warned that demand could be high enough that some applicants would not be able to buy a watch that year. The announcement documents a constrained allocation process; it does not establish the maker’s total production or sales.
Rank #2
- Stainless steel case 40mm diameter x 14mm thick; Exhibition case back; Black dial; Luminous hands and hour markers
- NH35A Japanese Automatic movement, 24 jewel; Assembled in Malaysia; Watch weight: 155 grams
- Stainless steel band, 210mm L x 20mm W; Band is adjustable by adding/removing links; Fold over safety clasp
- Mineral crystal; Screw-down crown; Diver stainless steel bezel with black top bezel ring; 200 meter water resistant: Suitable for professional marine activity and surface water sports. Suitable for diving.
The approach contrasts with Kurono’s timed Grand Mori order window: one brand used applications and separate buyer categories, while the other announced a defined time for orders. Neither model, by itself, indicates how many watches were ultimately sold.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. These milestones sit within a wider independent scene
Phillips describes a newer wave of Japanese independent watchmaking that includes Otsuka Lotec, Kurono Tokyo, NH WATCH, and Masa’s Pastime. That provides useful context for the year, but the cited background does not document a specific 2022 milestone for each of those makers. The strongest evidence for the year’s visibility is therefore the combination of Asaoka’s national recognition, Kurono’s releases and award-finalist status, and Naoya Hida & Co.’s tightly managed announcement—not a quantified industry-wide surge.
