The 9983-7000 is the Seiko Superior Twin Quartz reference discussed by Tomas Rosputinsky in Fratello’s 52Mondayz feature published December 23, 2019. Its caliber is 9983. The feature places it within Seiko’s 1970s effort to pursue high-precision quartz timekeeping.
The case design is a major part of the reference’s appeal: Rosputinsky calls attention to its angular sides, textured dial and integrated steel bracelet. These are his visual and wearing impressions, not a guarantee that every watch now offered has its original finish, dial or bracelet.
How accurate is the Twin Quartz caliber 9983?
Fratello states an accuracy specification of ±5 seconds per year for the 9983-7000. The feature describes the Twin Quartz approach as using a second oscillator to detect temperature effects and adjust for resulting variation. This is the feature’s account; the cited source is not an official Seiko technical document, and the specification should not be read as a promise about a decades-old individual watch today.

For a particular example, present-day timekeeping depends on its condition and maintenance. A seller’s claim that a watch runs well is not equivalent to a documented accuracy test over a stated period.

How the 9983-7000 compares with the 9983-8000
Rosputinsky compares the 7000 and 8000 versions primarily by case shape and finishing, preferring the sharper, more angular look of the 7000. The feature does not establish that either version is objectively superior. For a buyer choosing between examples, practical points include case geometry and finish, dial variation, overall condition, bracelet and end-link completeness, and available service documentation.
What did it cost, and what is it worth now?
The Fratello feature gives a 1978 catalog price of ¥230,000. It also reports period market estimates of roughly €1,000 in its narrative and $700–$1,200 in its specifications block, both as 2019-era figures. They are historical context, not a current valuation. No current transaction data or 2026 market estimate is established here; compare recent sales of genuinely similar watches and account for condition, originality, service and completeness.

What to check before buying a vintage example
- Ask for clear photographs of the movement and case back, as well as the dial, hands, case sides and bracelet. Have a qualified watchmaker assess mechanical condition when possible.
- Inspect the dial and hands for condition and consistency, and look closely at case edges for signs of polishing or refinishing that may soften the angular profile.
- Check whether the bracelet and end links fit correctly and whether the listing clearly identifies any replacement or missing parts.
- Request service records and ask what work was performed and when. If the watch lacks documentation, treat its service status as unknown rather than assuming it is ready for daily use.
- Read the seller’s return terms before purchase; photographs and descriptions cannot resolve every uncertainty about a vintage watch.
A watchmaker’s loupe can help examine crown details and subtle dial texture, as the Fratello author recommends, but close visual inspection cannot prove authenticity or mechanical health.
