Their published specifications are the same; the clearest difference is the dial: the SBGW297 is white, while the SBGW299 is dark blue.
What’s different between the SBGW297 and SBGW299?
Dial color is the main distinction established by Grand Seiko’s model pages. The SBGW297 has a refined white dial; the SBGW299 has a cool, dark-blue dial. Both are modern interpretations of the 44GS in the Heritage Collection, and the brand lists the same case, movement, accuracy, power reserve, water resistance, and band width for each.

Case size, movement, and daily wear
Each reference measures 36.5 mm across, 42.7 mm from lug tip to lug tip, and 11.6 mm thick. Those dimensions make the pair a mid-size option within the modern 44GS family. The shared 18 mm band-width specification is useful when assessing fit, but it does not by itself confirm that a particular aftermarket strap, clasp, or end link will fit the supplied watch configuration.
Hand-winding and power reserve
Both watches use Grand Seiko’s manually wound caliber 9S64. Grand Seiko lists an approximately 72-hour power reserve, or about three days, when fully wound. The shared movement and reserve mean neither reference has a published mechanical advantage over the other.

Accuracy and water resistance
Grand Seiko publishes a mean daily rate of +5 to −3 seconds per day under its stated controlled test and a normal-use accuracy range of +10 to −1 seconds per day for both models. The brand also lists 10 bar water resistance. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.
How the 44GS design fits the collection
Grand Seiko says the 44GS was released in 1967 and was the watch in which its “Grand Seiko Style design language was fully realized.” The SBGW297 and SBGW299 carry that design forward as modern Heritage Collection references, pairing the 44GS identity with a smaller case and a hand-wound movement. Grand Seiko’s SBGW297 model page and SBGW299 model page provide the brand’s design context and specifications.

Availability and price depend on market and date
GS9 Club | Grand Seiko announced that the watches would be available at Grand Seiko boutiques and authorized retailers starting in November 2023. That is the original release timing, not confirmation of current stock at any particular retailer. The release announcement identifies those intended retail channels.
For the United States, a Grand Seiko price-adjustment document lists an MSRP of $5,400 before an adjustment and $5,600 effective November 1, 2024, for each reference. Those figures document dated US pricing; they do not establish current US pricing or prices in other countries. The US price-adjustment document records the change. Grand Seiko’s Japanese boutique listings provide separate Japan-market pricing and purchase details, which may also change.

Which one should you choose?
- Choose the SBGW297 if you prefer the white-dial appearance.
- Choose the SBGW299 if you prefer the dark-blue dial.
- Consider the same practical factors for both: the 36.5 mm case, hand-winding routine, approximately three-day reserve, and availability and price in your market.
The official pages list the same core specifications for both references, so the available evidence points to dial preference—not a difference in performance—as the deciding factor.
