What is the Grand Seiko SBGY011 Asaborake?
SBGY011 belongs to Grand Seiko’s Heritage Collection. It brings the modern-design 44GS case together with a manually wound Spring Drive movement and a textured white dial. Grand Seiko says “Asaborake” describes the brief moment when dawn light penetrates morning mist and reveals the Shinshu mountain landscape, where the brand’s Spring Drive watches are made. Grand Seiko’s official model page presents the dial as an evocation of that scene.

The 44GS first appeared in 1967. Grand Seiko describes it as the first watch to embody Grand Seiko Style. The SBGY011 is a regular model in the modern-design 44GS line, rather than a limited edition, according to Seiko Watch Corporation’s launch announcement.
Case size, materials, and dial details
The stainless-steel case measures 40.0 mm across, 46.2 mm from lug to lug, and 10.5 mm thick. The watch weighs 77 g as officially listed and has a 19 mm band width. It comes on a crocodile leather strap. Those dimensions offer a more useful starting point for judging fit than diameter alone, but they do not establish how the watch will sit on any particular wrist.

The crystal is box-shaped sapphire with an anti-reflective coating on its inner surface. Grand Seiko says the slimmed crystal rim helps reduce the overall center of gravity and contributes to a slim profile and comfortable fit; that is the manufacturer’s design rationale, not a wearer-fit finding.
The dial is delicately patterned white, with a heat-blued seconds hand and diamond-cut indexes and hands, as described by the Grand Seiko US boutique. That page says the dial has no lume and attributes low-light legibility to its polished elements. This is a design claim from the boutique, not an independent visibility test.

How the hand-wound 9R31 Spring Drive works
The SBGY011 uses Caliber 9R31, a hand-wound Spring Drive movement. Grand Seiko attributes its approximately 72-hour reserve to a Dual Spring Barrel arrangement, with two springs set in parallel in one barrel. The movement also includes a power-reserve indicator and 30 jewels.
