Hanhart’s 417 ES Heritage Flyback pairs mid-century pilot-watch styling with a hand-wound column-wheel flyback chronograph, in two case sizes. The 39 mm version has the shorter footprint and a solid anti-magnetic caseback; the 42 mm version is larger and lets you view the movement through a sapphire display back. Both use a black dial, red HyCeram pusher and fluted bezel with a red marker.
What is the Hanhart 417 ES Heritage Flyback?
It is a modern mechanical chronograph in Hanhart’s 417 ES family, designed around the look of the company’s 1950s pilot chronograph. Hanhart says the new model came in response to recurring requests for a black-dial 417 ES with a column-wheel flyback movement and red HyCeram pusher.
The design carries over recognizable historical cues: a fluted bezel with a red marker, totalizers at 3 and 9 o’clock, and reactivated historical numerals and logo. Hanhart describes the historical 417 as a chronograph supplied to German armed forces aviation, saying the company supplied the armed forces for almost ten years. That is the manufacturer’s account of the watch’s history.
The red pusher also has a practical explanation in Hanhart’s account: its color was intended to help pilots avoid accidentally resetting elapsed time. Hanhart says the familiar story that a partner painted it with nail polish is uncertain, so it should be treated as legend rather than established origin.

What is the difference between the 39 mm and 42 mm versions?
The principal choice is case size and caseback construction. Hanhart calls 39 mm the historical original size. The 42 mm version has a longer lug-to-lug measurement and a sapphire display back. Both are specified at 13.3 mm high, including the crystal.

The dimensions tell you the measurable difference without making assumptions about how either watch will fit a particular wrist. If seeing the movement matters more than choosing the smaller dimensions, the 42 mm’s display back is the distinguishing feature.

What movement and functions does it have?
Hanhart specifies a hand-wound Sellita AMT5100 M movement with a column-wheel chronograph and flyback function. Its published specifications are 28,800 beats per hour (4 Hz), 23 jewels and a 58-hour power reserve.

Flyback lets you reset and immediately start timing a new interval with one press, rather than stopping the chronograph before resetting it. It is a useful timing function, and Hanhart associates it with the historical 417 ES.

What do the two versions share?
Both sizes retain the collection’s black-dial, mid-century-inspired layout and red-accented fluted bezel. Hanhart specifies a sapphire crystal and Super-LumiNova X2 C3 luminous material for the dial. The red HyCeram pusher is another shared design detail, alongside the hand-wound flyback movement.
Which strap or bracelet fits each configuration?
Hanhart lists leather options and steel bracelet configurations, but the lug width is not uniform across the cited references. The 39 mm steel-bracelet reference specifies 20 mm; the 42 mm steel-bracelet reference specifies 21 mm. Match the strap or bracelet to the exact reference rather than assuming accessories are interchangeable by collection name.
