The Grand Seiko SBGZ009 is a 50-piece platinum Spring Drive limited edition, introduced in 2023. Its winter-birch inspiration is expressed not only in a silver-toned textured dial but also in hand-engraving across the case. It is a distinct, manually wound Masterpiece Collection watch—not a platinum version of the SLGA009 or SLGH005 White Birch models.
What makes the SBGZ009 different?
Grand Seiko announced the SBGZ009 on March 27, 2023, as a hand-engraved, manual-winding Spring Drive watch in its Masterpiece Collection. The design takes inspiration from a winter white-birch forest near the North Yatsugatake Mountains in Shinshu, the region where the brand makes its Spring Drive watches. Grand Seiko described it as the third fully engraved masterpiece powered by a manual-winding Spring Drive movement. Grand Seiko’s launch announcement places the model in the context of its Shiojiri Micro Artist Studio, established in 2000.

The SBGZ009 should not be confused with the SLGA009 or SLGH005, which are separate White Birch references. The SBGZ009’s defining combination is a platinum case engraved to echo its birch-pattern dial, paired with caliber 9R02.
Dial and case: the birch pattern is engraved by hand
The dial has a silver-colored, metallic-textured white-birch pattern. Grand Seiko says artisans first create a distortion-free mirror surface on the platinum case using Zaratsu polishing, then engrave long grooves by hand. The pattern of those grooves echoes the dial. The result is a coordinated treatment of both surfaces rather than a patterned dial alone.

To set off the dial, the hour and minute hands are 14k white gold, the markers are diamond-cut, and the seconds hand is tempered grey. Grand Seiko describes the engraving as individual work; the visual idea is rooted in a specific landscape near the brand’s Shinshu watchmaking site.
Caliber 9R02: manual Spring Drive and an 84-hour reserve
The SBGZ009 uses Grand Seiko’s caliber 9R02, a manually wound Spring Drive movement with 39 jewels and a power-reserve indicator. Grand Seiko specifies an 84-hour power reserve and accuracy of ±1 second per day, equivalent to ±15 seconds per month. These are manufacturer-published figures, not independent test results.
Grand Seiko attributes the 84-hour reserve to the Dual Spring Barrel and Torque Return System. Its explanation is that two mainsprings are set in parallel in one barrel, while the Torque Return System redirects energy the brand says is not needed to maintain precision when the mainspring is fully wound. Grand Seiko describes the smooth glide of the seconds hand as a result of the manual-winding Spring Drive caliber, first presented in 2019.

All specifications in the table are those published by Grand Seiko; they should not be read as independently measured results. The 3-bar water-resistance rating is a modest specification, not a basis for treating the watch as a sports or diving model.

Grand Seiko said the 50-piece watch would be available at its boutiques in June 2023. That announcement does not establish present-day availability. A Phillips auction page records one example, numbered 38/50, sold for HK$444,500. That is one completed transaction, not a current valuation or a typical resale price.

Who is the SBGZ009 for?
The published specifications and construction point to a collector interested in hand-finishing, precious-metal casework and manually wound Spring Drive. Its 38.5 mm diameter and 9.8 mm thickness provide concrete dimensions for comparison, while its 3-bar water resistance makes clear that the specification is not aimed at a dive-watch use case. The 50-piece edition and historical launch pricing also distinguish it from a regular-production White Birch reference.
For a direct comparison with another watch, focus on movement and winding preference, case material and finishing, dimensions, water resistance, edition size, and prices from the same date and market. The SBGZ009’s specifications alone do not establish a ranking against other Grand Seiko models.
