The Grand Seiko SLGA007 turns a Lake Suwa-inspired blue dial and gold sunrise details into the face of a 2021 anniversary edition. Its other defining feature is Spring Drive Caliber 9RA2, whose seconds hand glides around the dial. The watch is limited to 2,021 pieces; whether it is worth buying now depends on the specific example and its asking price, neither of which can be judged from the edition size alone.
What makes the SLGA007 distinctive?
Grand Seiko announced the SLGA007 on August 23, 2021, as a Heritage Collection limited edition for the 140th anniversary of Kintaro Hattori’s company. Production was limited to 2,021 watches worldwide, with boutique and selected-retailer release planned for December 2021. Grand Seiko’s launch announcement describes a dial intended to evoke the gentle sway of Lake Suwa, near the Shinshu Watch Studio. Gold-colored details—the seconds hand and Grand Seiko lettering—are meant to suggest sunrise reflected on the water.

The appeal is therefore a particular contrast: a richly textured blue surface paired with a moving seconds hand that does not tick in discrete steps. Grand Seiko calls the dial “The quiet water surface of Lake Suwa.” That is the maker’s design description, not a claim that the pattern reproduces a literal view of the lake. The official SLGA007 product page presents the same inspiration.
How does Spring Drive Caliber 9RA2 work in this watch?
The SLGA007 uses automatic Spring Drive 5 Days Caliber 9RA2, with 38 jewels, two barrels and an Offset Magic Lever, according to Grand Seiko. Spring Drive combines a mainspring-powered gear train with electronic regulation; its characteristic glide is visible in the seconds hand. The maker specifies a power reserve of up to 120 hours, or five days.

- See-through case back
- Date display
- Screw-down crown
- 40mm Diameter
- Weight 178.0 g
Grand Seiko rates the movement at ±0.5 seconds per day, equivalent to ±10 seconds per month. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements of an individual watch. The movement can be seen through the sapphire caseback, while its power-reserve indicator is placed on the back rather than the dial, leaving the patterned face unobstructed. The caliber and display details are listed in the launch announcement and product page.
What are the case dimensions and practical specifications?
| Specification | Grand Seiko’s published detail |
|---|---|
| Case diameter | 40.0 mm |
| Case thickness | 11.8 mm |
| Case and bracelet | Stainless steel |
| Crystal | Dual-curved sapphire with anti-reflective coating |
| Water resistance | 10 bar |
| Magnetic resistance | 4,800 A/m |
| Crown | Screw-down |
These are the manufacturer’s launch specifications, not a guarantee of the condition or water resistance of a pre-owned watch today. A 10-bar rating describes the model’s stated resistance; it does not establish the condition of seals on a particular used example. Anyone intending to expose a pre-owned watch to water should have its condition and water resistance assessed by a qualified watch professional.

The 1916 Company published a hands-on review-video listing in February 2022. Its page summary gives thickness and lug-to-lug measurements that differ from Grand Seiko’s launch specifications. Those are retailer review measurements, not replacements for the brand’s published 11.8 mm thickness; the listing does not establish a detailed review verdict. View the 1916 Company listing.
Was the SLGA007 expensive, and what does its limited status mean?
Grand Seiko gave an approximate European recommended retail price of €9,100 in its 2021 announcement. That is historical launch pricing, not a current resale valuation. The announced production quantity of 2,021 establishes that this was a limited edition, but does not by itself establish present availability, a scarcity premium, or investment performance. Current supply and verified asking prices are not established here.

What should a pre-owned buyer check?
Because current listings and prices are not verified, evaluate an actual offer on its own evidence rather than treating the edition number as a price guide. Before buying, check:
Quick Recap
- That the watch is the exact SLGA007 reference, not a visually similar Grand Seiko model.
- Condition of the case, bracelet, crystal, crown and movement, supported by clear photographs and, where appropriate, an in-person inspection.
- Whether box, papers and other stated components are present, and whether the seller’s description matches what is included.
- The seller’s identity, reputation, return terms and authentication process.
- Any available service documentation, including dates and the work performed.
- The asking price against comparable, current offers that you can independently verify; the 2021 European retail figure is not a substitute.
