The Grand Seiko SLGA009 and SLGH005 are stainless-steel Evolution 9 “White Birch” watches, but their movements make them distinct: the SLGA009 uses Spring Drive caliber 9RA2, while the SLGH005 uses the mechanical Hi-Beat 36000 caliber 9SA5. That choice also means different power reserves and accuracy specifications; their case dimensions and shared birch-inspired design are otherwise closely related.

The main difference: Spring Drive versus mechanical Hi-Beat
SLGA009: Spring Drive caliber 9RA2
The SLGA009’s 9RA2 is an automatic Spring Drive movement with manual winding. Grand Seiko specifies a 120-hour reserve and accuracy of ±10 seconds per month. SLGH005: mechanical Hi-Beat caliber 9SA5
The SLGH005’s 9SA5 is a mechanical automatic movement that can also be wound by hand. It runs at 36,000 vibrations per hour and has an approximately 80-hour power reserve. The practical choice is between Spring Drive’s electronically regulated operation and longer stated reserve, and the SLGH005’s traditional mechanical architecture and 36,000-vibrations-per-hour rate. The specifications describe different movement approaches rather than establishing which watch will perform better for a particular owner.
How to read the accuracy figures
The SLGA009 is specified at ±10 seconds per month. Grand Seiko gives the SLGH005 two distinct figures: a mean daily rate of +5 to -3 seconds per day measured before casing under controlled conditions, and a normal-use accuracy specification of +8 to -1 seconds per day. The controlled-test rate is not interchangeable with the normal-use specification.

These are manufacturer specifications, not guarantees of the observed performance of an individual watch. The periods also differ: the SLGA009 figure is monthly, while the SLGH005 figures are daily.
Fit and case details
Both watches measure 40 mm across and take a 22 mm band. On the cited regional specifications, the SLGA009 is 0.9 mm longer from lug to lug and 0.1 mm thicker than the SLGH005. Those measurements alone cannot determine which will feel better on a particular wrist.

Both have stainless-steel cases and bracelets, 10-bar water resistance and sapphire crystals, but the crystal descriptions differ: dual-curved on the SLGA009 and box-shaped on the SLGH005. Their listed weights on the cited regional pages are 176 g and 178 g, respectively. Check the exact model and retailer listing for local specifications. A 22 mm band width does not by itself confirm compatibility with a particular replacement strap or end link.

Grand Seiko describes both models as White Birch interpretations in the Evolution 9 family, but presents them as distinct expressions rather than identical dials. The SLGH005 was introduced in March 2021; Grand Seiko’s January 2022 announcement presented the SLGA009 as a newer interpretation.
