They can help a movement meet a particular timekeeping or display goal, but they add complexity, consume energy, and may demand more space and difficult manufacturing. They are specialized design solutions—not a requirement for an accurate watch.
Why does a watch need constant force?
A mainspring does not deliver identical torque throughout its run. When fully wound, it exerts more torque; as it unwinds, the drive changes. That changing input can affect the balance’s amplitude—the size of its oscillations—and therefore influence the watch’s rate. The practical effect depends on the movement’s design; variable mainspring torque is not a defect that makes every mechanical watch inaccurate. IWC explains the relationship between mainspring tension and balance amplitude.
Constant-force systems try to reduce the variation reaching the regulator, usually by buffering or reshaping the power transmitted from the mainspring. The aim is steadier delivery, not an assurance of perfect timekeeping. The manufacturers and specialist coverage cited here describe intended effects and particular designs, but do not provide an independent comparative figure for how much accuracy improves.
How the main approaches differ
“Constant force” is an umbrella term, not a single mechanism. A remontoire, a fusee-and-chain, and an escapement-integrated constant-force device act at different points and in different ways.

Remontoire: buffer the drive with a small spring
A remontoire uses a small, pre-tensioned spring in the going train, near the escapement. The mainspring periodically rewinds or retensions it; during the next interval, the smaller spring supplies energy onward. In effect, it separates the escapement’s immediate supply from the mainspring’s changing output.
A. Lange & Söhne describes remontoire intervals of one, ten, and sixty seconds across different watches. The interval belongs to the specific design, not to remontoire mechanisms as a whole. A. Lange & Söhne says its LANGE 31 pairs a long, 31-day power reserve with a constant-force mechanism; it also notes that sustaining such a long reserve consumes considerable energy.

The cover at the end of the screwdriver can be opened, and the inside is hollow for storing other screwdriver bits.
- 【The purpose of the watch case holder】 - The watch case holder can be used with other tools in the kit to help fix the watch and reduce the risk of sliding and scratching the watch. It is suitable for watches of various sizes, and can be used for watches with a diameter of up to 50mm.
Fusee-and-chain: change the leverage
A fusee-and-chain tackles changing mainspring torque through a variable-radius transmission. A chain wraps around a cone-shaped fusee; as the mainspring unwinds, the chain’s position changes the leverage and helps even out the force delivered to the train. This is mechanically distinct from a remontoire’s periodically replenished spring. IWC notes that the arrangement takes substantial space, which limits its use in wristwatches. IWC’s explanation of the fusee-and-chain.
Constant-force escapement: regulate energy at the escapement
Some designs put the force-controlling element into the escapement itself rather than adding a buffer elsewhere in the train. In Girard-Perregaux’s Constant Escapement, for example, a buckling silicon blade forms part of the escapement and delivers impulses to the regulator. This architecture is not mechanically interchangeable with a remontoire, even when both are described using “constant force.” Hodinkee’s technical overview distinguishes these approaches.

What the mechanism can do beyond smoothing power
A constant-force device may serve a display complication as well as a timekeeping objective. In A. Lange & Söhne’s ZEITWERK, the remontoire’s periodic impulse also advances the jumping numeral discs; the company describes a sixty-second retensioning interval for that model. Its RICHARD LANGE JUMPING SECONDS uses a one-second cycle. These are model-specific functions and intervals, not standard properties of every constant-force watch. A. Lange & Söhne’s description of its constant-force escapements.
IWC describes its Ingenieur Constant Force Tourbillon as using an additional escapement between the escape wheel and fourth wheel. That mechanism winds a balance spring once per second, temporarily storing energy before it reaches the escapement. IWC says it chose a frequency of 2.5 Hz for this design so the spring could be wound each second. The frequency describes this IWC implementation; it is not a general specification for constant-force watches. IWC’s account of its tourbillon mechanism.

What are the trade-offs?
- More complexity: A remontoire or added escapement introduces components and interactions beyond a basic train. George Daniels, quoted by Hodinkee from Watchmaking, called the remontoire an effective way to smooth power delivery, while noting that it is complex and costly to make.
- Energy use: The mechanism itself draws on the movement’s energy. A. Lange & Söhne specifically describes considerable consumption in the long-reserve context of the LANGE 31; that description should not be assumed to quantify every constant-force design.
- Space: A fusee-and-chain can require more room than a wristwatch movement readily offers. Other architectures have their own packaging demands, which depend on the design.
- Manufacturing demands: IWC reports stringent manufacturing and assembly requirements for its Constant Force Tourbillon. Exact tolerances, parts, and service demands vary by construction; the sources do not establish a universal service-cost premium for all such watches.
How to compare two constant-force watches
A label alone does not tell you what a mechanism does or what a wearer gains. For a useful comparison, identify the architecture and the model-specific objective first, then check what evidence supports any performance claim.
- Architecture: Is it a remontoire or intermediate spring, a fusee-and-chain, or a force-controlling element integrated into the escapement?
- Purpose: Is the stated goal steadier rate across a long reserve, operation of a complication such as jumping seconds, or both?
- Model-specific figures: Check the replenishment interval, power reserve, and frequency for the exact watch. Do not transfer one model’s figures to another.
- Implementation burden: Consider the documented demands on space, energy, manufacturing, and assembly, while avoiding assumptions about unsupported parts counts or service costs.
- Evidence: Separate a manufacturer’s explanation of design intent from independent comparative measurement. The examples discussed here illustrate different architectures; they are not a controlled performance ranking.
Examples cited by the manufacturers and technical coverage include A. Lange & Söhne’s LANGE 31, ZEITWERK, RICHARD LANGE JUMPING SECONDS, and RICHARD LANGE PERPETUAL CALENDAR “Terraluna”; IWC’s Ingenieur Constant Force Tourbillon and Portugieser Sidérale Scafusia; and the Girard-Perregaux Constant Escapement L.M., Arnold & Son Constant Force Tourbillon, and Lang & Heyne Markgraf Heinrich. Their inclusion identifies examples of the broader idea, not proof that their performance is equivalent.

Is constant force worth the complication?
It depends on the design goal. A constant-force mechanism can address variation in the drive or enable a distinctive complication, but it does so by adding a mechanism with its own energy, space, and manufacturing demands. For a buyer or enthusiast, the meaningful question is not whether a watch has “constant force” in its name; it is how that particular architecture serves the movement, and whether the maker’s claims are supported by evidence beyond design intent.
