What are the SLGB001 and SLGB003?
Grand Seiko announced both references on April 1, 2025, as the first Evolution 9 watches powered by automatic Spring Drive Caliber 9RB2. The brand calls the movement U.F.A., short for “Ultra Fine Accuracy.” Availability was scheduled to begin in June 2025. Grand Seiko’s announcement says specifications and prices are subject to change.

The SLGB001 is the more exclusive precious-metal version: a Platinum 950 case, crocodile strap and limited production of 80 pieces for Grand Seiko Boutiques. The SLGB003 pairs a high-intensity titanium case with a matching bracelet and a clasp that can be adjusted without tools. Both have a 37.0 mm case diameter and 11.4 mm thickness.

How accurate is Spring Drive U.F.A.?
Grand Seiko rates Caliber 9RB2 at ±20 seconds per year, or approximately ±3 seconds per month. The annual figure is the headline rating; it should not be read as a guarantee that every watch will gain or lose no more than that amount in every owner’s conditions. Grand Seiko described it in April 2025 as the most accurate wristwatch movement powered by a mainspring, based on the brand’s own research. This is a manufacturer claim, not a reported independent comparative test.
Spring Drive is not a conventional battery-powered quartz watch. Its energy comes from a mainspring, while an electronic regulation system controls timekeeping. Grand Seiko says development began in the late 1970s. Its 2004 Caliber 9R65 combined automatic winding and a 72-hour reserve with a monthly accuracy rating of ±15 seconds; Caliber 9RB2 advances the stated precision to an annual ±20 seconds.
What Grand Seiko says changed in Caliber 9RB2
The brand attributes the accuracy rating to manufacturing and processing improvements for a quartz oscillator aged for three months, together with a newly designed low-power integrated circuit. Each oscillator is measured at multiple temperatures, and temperature-compensation data is programmed into the circuit. Grand Seiko also says the oscillator and sensor are vacuum-sealed to reduce temperature differences and protect them from humidity, static electricity and light.
The movement includes a regulation switch intended for after-sales service, allowing a watchmaker to correct divergences that may develop over long use. Grand Seiko’s April 2025 release summarized the development this way: “The new movement achieves its ±20-seconds-per-year accuracy thanks to new and enhanced manufacturing and processing methods for the three-month-aged quartz oscillator and a newly designed IC.”

The SLGB003 uses high-intensity titanium for its case, bracelet and three-fold clasp. Its clasp offers three tool-free adjustment steps, each 2 mm, for changing bracelet fit. Grand Seiko describes high-intensity titanium as about 30% lighter than stainless steel. The dial is silver-tinged blue, paired with a tempered blue seconds hand.
A shared landscape and design language
Grand Seiko says both dials evoke trees covered in frost in the Kirigamine Highlands, east of the Shinshu Watch Studio, where the brand says all its Spring Drive watches are made. The models belong to the Evolution 9 Collection, which Grand Seiko presents as an extension of its design language back to the 1967 44GS. The brand points to broad hands and grooved indexes for legibility, alternating Zaratsu mirror polishing and hairline finishes, and a low center of gravity intended to support comfort.
What do the launch prices and availability mean now?
The April 2025 release gave European recommended retail prices of €42,000 for the SLGB001 and €12,000 for the SLGB003, and said availability would start in June 2025. Its stated launch channels were Grand Seiko Boutiques for the 80-piece SLGB001 and boutiques plus selected retail partners worldwide for the SLGB003. Grand Seiko’s U.S. Boutique collection page displayed $39,000 and $11,400 respectively on October 7, 2026.
