The Grand Seiko Tentagraph SLGC001 is the brand’s first mechanical chronograph, powered by the automatic Caliber 9SC5. Its defining technical combination is a 36,000-vph movement with a manufacturer-specified 72-hour reserve while the chronograph is running, housed in a 43.2 mm high-intensity titanium case with a ceramic bezel. The specifications make it an ambitious sports watch; its dimensions are substantial, so they matter as much as its movement when considering the SLGC001.

What is the Grand Seiko Tentagraph?

The SLGC001 is an automatic chronograph in Grand Seiko’s Evolution 9 Collection. Grand Seiko calls it the Tentagraph and describes the Caliber 9SC5 as its first mechanical chronograph. The brand’s official product page says: “The movement inside is the Caliber 9SC5, Grand Seiko’s first mechanical chronograph ‘Tentagraph.’” Grand Seiko SLGC001 specifications

The name refers to the movement’s stated combination: ten beats per second, three days of power reserve, automatic winding and chronograph. The 9SC5 is based on Grand Seiko’s Caliber 9SA5. Its high frequency and long reserve are central to the watch’s proposition, rather than simply supporting a conventional two-register chronograph.

How does the 9SC5 chronograph work?

The 9SC5 runs at 36,000 vibrations per hour, or ten beats per second. Grand Seiko’s specification lists approximately 72 hours of reserve with the chronograph operating—not just with the chronograph switched off. The maker states, “Fully wound, the watch runs for 72 hours when the chronograph is in operation.” That is a manufacturer specification, not an independent timing or endurance test. The US boutique describes the chronograph as using a vertical clutch and column wheel. In Grand Seiko’s account, the vertical clutch is intended to prevent the hands from shuddering or jumping when the chronograph starts; a three-pointed hammer returns the hands to zero in synchronization. These are the manufacturer’s descriptions of the mechanism’s intended operation, not independently observed performance. Grand Seiko Boutique Online SLGC001 page

The official regional specifications distinguish two accuracy figures: a mean daily rate of +5 to −3 seconds per day under controlled pre-assembly conditions, and normal-use accuracy of +8 to −1 seconds per day. The tighter pre-assembly figure should not be read as a guaranteed result on every wearer’s wrist; the figures refer to different conditions. Grand Seiko SLGC001 specifications

How big is the SLGC001?

The case measures 43.2 mm in diameter, 51.5 mm from lug to lug and 15.3 mm thick. Those are substantial dimensions, particularly the thickness and lug-to-lug length, and are important considerations for anyone choosing a watch to wear under a cuff or on a smaller wrist. No firsthand fit assessment is established here.

The case is made from high-intensity titanium and is topped with a ceramic bezel and box-shaped sapphire crystal. Grand Seiko Boutique Online says the case and bracelet are about 30% lighter than stainless steel, a comparison supplied by the manufacturer. The same page describes alternating Zaratsu-polished and hairline-finished surfaces. Grand Seiko Boutique Online SLGC001 page

What do the dial and chronograph display?

Grand Seiko says the dial pattern draws inspiration from Mt. Iwate, visible from Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi, and describes the blue tone as evoking the night sky above the mountain. That is the maker’s design account. The chronograph provides 30-minute and 12-hour displays, and the watch includes a tachymeter. Grand Seiko SLGC001 specifications

Is the Tentagraph suitable for water use?

The published specification is 10 bar water resistance. That figure is the stated rating; it does not establish a more specific activity recommendation. The SLGC001 also has a screw-down crown and case back according to the official product specifications, but users should follow the manufacturer’s guidance for their intended use.

How much does the Grand Seiko Tentagraph cost?

Price depends on market and listing state. When accessed in 2026, Grand Seiko’s regional product page displayed USD 14,100, while the US boutique page displayed USD 14,700 and marked the watch out of stock. These are differing, time-sensitive page listings—not a universal price or a reliable statement of present availability. Check the relevant market’s official listing or an authorized retailer for current terms.

Who should consider the SLGC001?

The Tentagraph is most compelling to a buyer who specifically wants a high-beat mechanical chronograph and values a long stated reserve while the chronograph is running. Its titanium-and-ceramic construction and Evolution 9 design give it a distinct identity, while the 43.2 mm width, 51.5 mm lug-to-lug span and 15.3 mm thickness make its physical scale a key part of the decision. The available specifications explain the engineering and design, but do not substitute for trying the watch on if fit is decisive.
