Its central appeal is a white, textured dial paired with Caliber 9RA2, which Grand Seiko rates at approximately five days of power reserve and ±10 seconds per month. The specifications make it a compelling technical proposition; whether its 40 mm case and bracelet suit you is a matter to settle on the wrist, not from the numbers alone.
What the SLGA009 is—and what this review can establish
The SLGA009 combines the White Birch design with Grand Seiko’s Spring Drive Caliber 9RA2. It is self-winding and can also be wound manually. The available product information establishes its specifications and regional listed prices, but not firsthand handling, bracelet comfort, dial legibility in different lighting, or a direct comparison against another watch. Those points should be assessed in person rather than treated as tested findings.
Grand Seiko also sells a White Birch Hi-Beat model, the SLGH005. It is a meaningful alternative if you are choosing between the Spring Drive and Hi-Beat versions, but the specifications available here do not support a detailed numerical comparison.
Caliber 9RA2: five-day reserve and published accuracy
Grand Seiko specifies approximately 120 hours of power reserve—about five days when fully wound—and accuracy of ±10 seconds per month, equivalent to ±0.5 second per day. These are manufacturer figures, not a guarantee of the rate any individual watch will achieve in every wearing condition.
#1 Best Overall
- See-through case back
- Date display
- Screw-down crown
- 40mm Diameter
- Weight 178.0 g
Grand Seiko describes the 9RA2’s temperature-compensation system as measuring temperature 540 times per hour to compensate for variations in oscillator performance. The movement is visible through the see-through case back. The official US boutique page describes the 9RA2 as a Spring Drive caliber with automatic winding and manual winding.
Case, bracelet and official specifications
The Singapore Grand Seiko product page lists the following dimensions and specifications. Measurements can vary between regional product pages, so these figures are attributed to that listing rather than treated as universal.
| Specification | Grand Seiko Singapore listing |
|---|---|
| Case material | Stainless steel |
| Case diameter | 40.0 mm |
| Lug-to-lug | 47.9 mm |
| Thickness | 11.8 mm |
| Band width | 22 mm |
| Weight | 176 g |
| Water resistance | 10 bar |
| Magnetic resistance | 4,800 A/m |
| Crystal | Dual-curved sapphire with inner anti-reflective coating |
| Case back and crown | See-through screw case back; screw-down crown |
| Other listed features | Power-reserve indicator; folding clasp |
At 40 mm in diameter and 47.9 mm lug-to-lug, the dimensions offer a useful starting point, but they cannot settle fit by themselves. Wrist shape, bracelet sizing and personal preference affect how a watch wears. Try the SLGA009 on if possible, paying particular attention to how the lugs sit and how the bracelet feels after adjustment.
The 22 mm band width means a strap is a possible accessory route, but width alone does not verify compatibility with a specific strap, end link or clasp. Confirm those details before buying a replacement.
Rank #2
- Three-fold clasp with push button release
- Dual-curved sapphire crystal
- Power reserve display on the back
- Power resrve Approx. 72 hours(3 days)
White Birch dial and wearing experience
The White Birch dial is a defining part of the SLGA009’s identity, but the available specifications do not establish how its texture reads in person, how easily the hands and markers can be read in varied light, or how the finishing appears at different angles. If those qualities are central to your decision, inspect the watch under more than one lighting condition rather than relying only on product imagery.
The same applies to the bracelet and the view through the display back: the listing confirms the bracelet-related specifications and transparent case back, but not comfort, adjustment range or the visual impression of the movement. These are practical reasons to handle the exact watch before committing.
SLGA009 versus the White Birch Hi-Beat SLGH005
The SLGH005 is the earlier Hi-Beat counterpart to the Spring Drive SLGA009. The clearest distinction established here is the movement type named in each model: the SLGA009 uses Spring Drive Caliber 9RA2, while the SLGH005 is the Hi-Beat version. The information available does not provide complete SLGH005 specifications, so it would be misleading to make a numerical claim about differences in rate, reserve, dimensions or price.
For a real-world choice, compare the two watches in person and check the current specifications and price on the official page for your region. Consider movement preference, dial appearance, fit and bracelet feel rather than assuming the shared White Birch name makes them interchangeable.

Is the Grand Seiko SLGA009 worth it?
The SLGA009 has a clear case if you want the White Birch design with Spring Drive, a manufacturer-stated reserve of approximately five days and published accuracy of ±10 seconds per month. Its specifications are also specific enough to help screen for basic fit: the Singapore listing gives a 40.0 mm diameter, 47.9 mm lug-to-lug length and 11.8 mm thickness.
Its value for you depends on the fit and finishing in person, your preference for Spring Drive over the Hi-Beat White Birch, and the price in your market. The published technical figures make it easy to understand what Grand Seiko promises; they do not replace trying the watch on or checking a current local quote.
