Greubel Forsey presents this arrangement as an alternative to tourbillon-based timing optimization: the differential averages the rate of the two oscillators, while their different orientations are intended to counter gravity-related positional effects. Those are the maker’s design aims, not independent proof of superior accuracy.
How does the Greubel Forsey Double Balancier work?
At the centre of the watch are two complete oscillators—each built around a balance—set on different axes at precise, predetermined angles. A spherical differential couples them. Greubel Forsey’s explanation is that the inclined balances address positional effects associated with gravity and that the differential averages their rates. The brand describes this approach as an alternative to optimizing rate with a tourbillon. It should be understood as the movement’s intended operating principle, not as a published comparative accuracy result.
The differential makes one rotation every four minutes. That is a mechanical cycle of the regulating system, not the length of a seconds-hand interval. The official functions also include hours, minutes, small seconds, differential rotation and a power-reserve indication. Greubel Forsey outlines the Double Balancier concept in its watchmaking history.
What does the constant spherical differential do?
It links the two oscillators and combines their rate behaviour into an average. In SJX’s 2016 examination of a white-gold example, the constant-force mechanism is described as using two small springs mounted on the differential gears. The springs store and release a small amount of energy at each cycle; SJX says the mechanism can be seen from the front and back. This is that publication’s explanation of the examined version.

What is visible on the watch?
SJX’s 2016 account describes twin barrels visible beside the hands and draws attention to the four-minute mechanism and its springs. The display is therefore not just a conventional dial with an unusual regulator hidden away: the movement’s paired balances and differential are central to the watch’s visual identity.
For a sense of scale, SJX called its 43 mm white-gold example heavy on the wrist, with a strong tactile and visual presence. That is one reviewer’s observation about one case version, not a universal fit assessment. Horobox’s 2020 hands-on review describes sapphire crystals with anti-reflective coating on both sides and an in-house, hand-wound calibre. Horobox rounds the height to 13 mm; the official specification is more precise at 13.38 mm.

Production history and edition counts
Greubel Forsey lists 55 pieces produced from 2016 to 2022. The brand calls this period “The Double Balancier era” and describes the defining architecture as two inclined balances coupled to a Constant Spherical Differential.

The count is easy to misread alongside SJX’s October 2016 report of a 33-piece white-gold edition. That figure describes a particular edition, not the complete model-family production. SJX also reported a price of SFr350,000 at the time; it is a historical, edition-specific price and says nothing about current value. Horobox reports that the watch was first presented to enthusiasts at SIHH 2016.

The production period on the official page ends in 2022, but that does not establish whether a particular example is currently for sale. Current stock and present market value have not been verified here. Collectors should treat any asking price or availability claim as specific to a seller, watch, edition and date rather than infer it from the 2016 price report.
