The Greubel Forsey Tourbillon Cardan is a manually wound titanium watch built around an inclined tourbillon that turns inside a controlled, moving Cardan assembly. Greubel Forsey calls it its eighth Fundamental Invention. The maker specifies an 80-hour chronometric power reserve and a production limit of 55 watches for 2023–2027; its official materials do not state a price or current availability.
What is a tourbillon?
A tourbillon places a watch’s escapement and regulating organ inside a rotating cage. The historical aim was to counter rate variations associated with vertical positions. Greubel Forsey uses that idea as a starting point here, combining a rapidly rotating inner tourbillon with a separate system that changes its inclination and orientation.
A tourbillon is a mechanism, not by itself proof that a watch is more accurate. Greubel Forsey describes the Cardan arrangement as its approach to the positions a wristwatch encounters, but the published sources do not provide comparative chronometric test results for this model.
How does the Tourbillon Cardan work?
A fast inner tourbillon
The inner tourbillon completes one rotation every 16 seconds. It is inclined at 30 degrees rather than sitting in the more familiar vertical plane of a conventional single-axis tourbillon.

Controlled motion from two Cardan rings
Two mobile rings, linked by axes set at 90 degrees, carry the inclined tourbillon through a controlled arc. Their assembly completes a 48-second cycle with a double variable tilt. Greubel Forsey says the rings are controlled rather than free-running like a conventional gimbal: the tourbillon remains inclined at 30 degrees while the assembly’s orientation relative to gravity changes. The company describes the motion as moving from +30° to −30° every 48 seconds.
The rings also carry structural loads that a fixed upper bridge would ordinarily bear, giving the mechanism its flying appearance. Greubel Forsey describes this construction as patented; the published sources do not provide patent numbers or independent legal verification.

What the design means for performance
Greubel Forsey’s stated rationale is that changing the tourbillon’s orientation helps address the range of positions experienced during wristwatch wear. That is the maker’s design intent, not a published demonstration of superior accuracy: the available model sources give no comparative test data or independent performance measurements.

The distinction between running time and chronometric reserve also matters. The stated 80 hours is the period for which Greubel Forsey says the watch remains within its own precision tolerance; it does not mean the watch stops immediately after 80 hours.
How to compare it with another complicated watch
When comparing the Tourbillon Cardan with another tourbillon or high-complication watch, focus on differences that can be established from specifications rather than assuming a complication guarantees a performance benefit.

- Regulator motion: compare the number of axes, inclination, rotation period, and whether the motion is controlled.
- Case format: check diameter and total height, including crystals; the Cardan’s overall height is substantially greater than its stated case height because of its domed crystals.
- Winding autonomy: compare chronometric reserve, barrel architecture, and whether the maker distinguishes precision-qualified reserve from total running time.
- Construction: examine component counts, materials, visible bridges or rings, and the finishing described by the maker.
- Production and access: separate a stated production limit from actual stock or remaining allocations.
- Price and ownership costs: use current offers for the relevant market. Greubel Forsey’s model sources reviewed here do not state a price.

Greubel Forsey sets a production limit of 55 Tourbillon Cardan timepieces for 2023–2027. This is a production plan, not a count of remaining watches or confirmation that one can currently be ordered.
