It combines a grey dial, white registers, red accents and a black diver-style bezel with a cam-operated Valjoux 7733 movement, designated Hamilton 647. Its reported historical depth rating does not establish that a surviving example is water-resistant today.
What is the Hamilton Chrono-Diver Big Eye?
Michael Stockton’s collector review for Fratello Watches, published November 26, 2015, says Hamilton introduced the Chrono-Diver in 1970. “Big Eye” refers to the two large chronograph subregisters, which dominate the dial. The watch brings together chronograph styling and a rotating diver-style bezel; the nickname describes its dial, not a separate model.
The visual identity is a grey dial with white subdials, a red minute track and red central chronograph hand, framed by a black rotating bezel. Stockton also describes luminous hands and applied indices, a tall crystal, triangular-profile pushers, a signed crown and a bezel lume pip. Those fine details reflect his examination of an example, rather than a complete factory specification for every watch.
What movement is in a Hamilton Chrono-Diver?
The movement identified in the Fratello review is the cam-operated Valjoux 7733, called Hamilton 647 in this watch. An archived dealer listing for a particular 1970s example also identifies it as a Hamilton 647 with a Valjoux 7733. The review says the movement should be signed; a photograph or seller description alone cannot establish service condition, so ask for clear movement evidence and an assessment if its operation is uncertain.

How big is the Hamilton Chrono-Diver?
Reported measurements vary by source and example. Stockton’s review gives an approximate 38 mm case diameter and 20 mm lug width. A sold HQ Milton listing for one example gives a 37 mm case. Treat these as source-specific measurements, not proof of a single exact dimension for every Chrono-Diver. If fit or a replacement strap matters, confirm the measurements of the individual watch before purchase.
What to inspect before buying one
Originality and condition matter more than a checklist of cosmetic details alone. Use the following points to guide questions to the seller and, where appropriate, an independent watchmaker:

- RICH HERITAGE: Over a century of Hamilton's legacy in field watches, admired for precision. Originally designed for WWI soldiers, these timepieces combine rugged durability with history, showcasing Hamilton's commitment to quality and innovation.
- Dial: Look closely for a redial, including an incorrect logo or printing. Ask for sharp, evenly lit photographs so the dial details can be inspected.
- Hands: Compare the hands with reliable photographs of the model and ask whether they are believed to be correct. Stockton specifically flags incorrect hands as a concern.
- Bezel and crown: Check that the bezel is present and ask whether the crown is signed. The review lists missing bezels and unsigned crowns among issues to watch for.
- Bezel lume pip: The review notes that examples without the bezel pip are common and treats its absence as a lesser concern, not an automatic deal-breaker.
- Movement and function: Request a movement photograph showing its signature and ask for details about running, chronograph operation and service history. A non-running watch should be evaluated by a competent watchmaker rather than assumed to need a minor repair.
- Case and dimensions: Examine the case for wear and ask the seller to measure the specific watch. Published measurements differ, and condition affects how a vintage watch wears.
- Authenticity evidence: Ask what supports the seller’s claims about originality and request photographs of the dial, case, bezel, crown and movement. The archived dealer listing documents one example, not a universal reference standard.
Is a vintage Chrono-Diver safe to swim or dive with?
No historical rating can establish present-day water resistance for an individual vintage watch. Stockton’s 2015 review reports a depth rating of 666 feet for the model, but it does not provide current pressure-test results for watches now on the market. Seals age, watches may have been opened or repaired, and condition varies. Do not swim or dive with an example on the strength of that historical figure. If water resistance matters, have a qualified watchmaker assess the particular watch and pressure-test it.
Straps and wearing fit
The reported lug width is 20 mm, making “20 mm watch strap” a useful search term. Stockton describes examples paired with black and grey leather, NATO and tan stingray straps. Measure the individual watch before ordering: a source-reported dimension is a starting point, not a guarantee that a particular strap will fit.

What do old price references tell buyers today?
Stockton’s 2015 article described a then-current range of about $600–850, noted listings around $1,000, and recalled an earlier $400–650 range. These are historical statements from that article, not current valuations. The surfaced HQ Milton example is marked sold; its listing does not establish present availability or a market price. The available evidence does not support a current price range, so evaluate a specific watch against its condition, originality, service needs and the seller’s documentation rather than relying on those old figures.
