The Louis Vuitton Monterey is a modern revival of the House’s first wristwatches, the LV I and LV II, designed with Italian architect Gae Aulenti in 1988. The 2025 limited edition pairs a 39mm yellow-gold case with a white Grand Feu enamel dial and an in-house automatic movement; Louis Vuitton limited it to 188 pieces. The current Monterey story also includes 37mm black and green ceramic models that draw on the original LV II.
The title’s “hands-on” wording refers to the debut and published coverage, not independent wrist testing by this article. No personal wear impressions or measurements are claimed here.
A 1988 idea, revived in new forms
Louis Vuitton dates its first wristwatches—the LV I and LV II—to 1988 and credits Gae Aulenti with their design. Both challenged conventional watch proportions with pebble-shaped, lugless cases and crowns at 12 o’clock. The 2025 gold Monterey revisits those design codes, while the current ceramic models especially honor the smaller LV II.
The revival is not a literal reissue. The 2025 edition moves from the originals’ quartz approach to an in-house automatic movement and adds a white Grand Feu enamel dial. The later ceramic models have their own size, materials, and dial treatments; their details should not be confused with those of the 2025 gold edition.

Why the original LV I and LV II mattered
Louis Vuitton commissioned Aulenti, an Italian architect and multidisciplinary designer, to create its first wristwatches. The LV I had a 40mm pebble-shaped, lugless case, a crown at 12 o’clock, railway-inspired graphics, and travel-oriented functions including date, GMT, and world time. The LV II was a smaller 37mm ceramic model with date and alarm functions, according to Louis Vuitton’s launch history.
The name Monterey is linked to “Montre 1” and “Montre 2,” the names originally used for the LV I and LV II, according to the same launch announcement. The watches joined an unconventional case shape and travel-inspired displays with Aulenti’s design perspective, rather than following the usual template for a round wristwatch.
The 2025 limited gold edition
The 2025 Monterey translates the family’s pebble-shaped, lugless outline into a 39mm yellow-gold case. Its white Grand Feu enamel dial carries red and blue graphic scales, and Louis Vuitton announced production limited to 188 pieces. The brand described the edition limit as a nod to the watches’ 1988 debut.

The Monterey is best understood as a family of modern interpretations, not a single specification carried unchanged from the 2025 gold edition to the later ceramic models. The designs preserve the original watches’ unusual outline and graphic identity while changing materials, sizes, and presentation between editions.

The research available for this article does not establish a consistently verified current price or stock status for the ceramic variants. Check the relevant regional Louis Vuitton listing for current information. The 2025 gold edition’s production limit of 188 pieces does not establish whether any pieces remain available, and that limit should not be applied to the ceramic models.

Who might be interested in the Monterey?
- Design collectors: The lugless pebble case and 12 o’clock crown connect the modern watches to Aulenti’s original designs.
- Collectors interested in the 2025 edition: Its yellow-gold case, Grand Feu enamel dial, and 188-piece limit distinguish it from the ceramic models.
- Fans of the LV II design: The 37mm ceramic variants explicitly draw on the smaller original model.
- Louis Vuitton watch-history readers: The Monterey links the House’s first wristwatches with its contemporary watchmaking operation.
Verdict
The Monterey revival keeps the elements that made the 1988 LV I and LV II distinctive: Aulenti’s unconventional pebble-shaped, lugless cases and the crown at 12 o’clock. The 2025 gold edition adds a white Grand Feu enamel dial and an automatic movement, while the current 37mm ceramic models offer a separate interpretation rooted especially in the LV II.
These are collector-oriented designs rather than straightforward vintage reproductions. To compare them accurately, keep the 2025 gold edition’s 39mm size and 188-piece limit separate from the 37mm ceramic models, and verify current regional price and availability before making a purchase decision.
