A watch made from Alpine granite
The RockWatch was introduced in 1985 as what Tissot describes as the first watch made from granite sourced in the Swiss Alps. Turning granite into a wearable case was not a simple matter of cutting a piece of stone to size: Tissot says the material’s instability required dedicated machines, tools and production processes.

That unusual construction gave the original RockWatch an identity that conventional steel, gold and plastic watches could not easily duplicate. Tissot says customers responded to the idea of wearing a piece of Switzerland on the wrist. Independent coverage has also described the 1980s RockWatch as a cult model from the period, when Tissot experimented with materials including jasper, lapis and fossilized coral. The revived edition returns to granite as its defining material.
The new watch uses genuine granite identified by Tissot as coming from Jungfrau Mountain in Switzerland. The stone is not merely decorative trim: it forms the case and the natural-stone dial. Because granite is naturally formed, the color, grain and markings differ from watch to watch. Tissot says no two examples are exactly alike.

The original red-and-yellow hands were an important part of the watch’s Alpine visual language. Tissot replaces them here with nickel-plated hands, making the stone itself the main visual feature. The change is less playful, but arguably makes the revived model easier to wear with modern clothing.

The crystal is another meaningful upgrade. The new RockWatch has a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment, rather than the mineral crystal used on the original. Sapphire is generally more resistant to everyday scratching than mineral crystal, although that does not make the watch indestructible. The domed profile also helps preserve the integrated appearance of the crystal and stone dial.
