Hands-On Tissot Seastar 1000 Powermatic 80 Review: The 40mm Model Tested

The 40mm Tissot Seastar 1000 Powermatic 80 offers sapphire, 300m water resistance, and an 80-hour reserve, but its mineral bezel ring and basic clasp reveal the compromises.

The current 40mm Tissot Seastar 1000 Powermatic 80 is an unusually serious Swiss automatic dive-style watch for its price. It combines 300m water resistance, a sapphire crystal, a long 80-hour power reserve, a luminous dial, and a screw-down crown. Its compromises are equally clear: the current 40mm model uses a mineral bezel ring rather than ceramic or sapphire, and its bracelet clasp lacks the fine adjustment found on more expensive dive watches.

There is an important qualification before discussing dimensions or value: “Seastar 1000 Powermatic 80” describes a family, not one universal watch. This review focuses primarily on the current 40mm generation, represented by references such as T120.807.11.091.00. Older reviews often describe a substantially larger 42–43mm model with different bezel details.

Design and wearing experience

The most consequential change in the current collection is the move to a 40mm case. The earlier Seastar 1000 Powermatic 80 commonly reviewed in 2018 measured roughly 42mm across the case, about 43mm across the bezel, 13.3mm thick, and 49.6mm from lug to lug. The current model is shorter, narrower, and slightly thinner on paper, making it a more approachable option for people who find contemporary dive watches oversized.

Published hands-on reports found the 40mm model balanced well on a 6.75-inch wrist and on a 17cm wrist. Those are reviewer observations rather than independent testing, but they support the practical conclusion suggested by the dimensions: this is the safer Seastar for smaller and medium-sized wrists. The older 42–43mm version still makes sense if you want a more assertive, sport-watch presence.

Tissot gives the case a mixture of brushed planes and polished bevels, with a notch along the case edges that adds visual definition. The result is more detailed than the price might suggest without becoming dressy. Black-PVD, two-tone gold-PVD, stainless-steel, blue, turquoise, and gradient configurations give the family different personalities, so the reference matters as much for appearance as it does for specifications.

Dial, crystal, and legibility

The 40mm models use vertically brushed fumé or gradient dials that fade toward black at the edges. Applied indices, sword-style hands, and Super-LumiNova on the hands and hour markers give the watch the visual language expected of a diver. Hands-on reviewers praised the contrast and reported strong readability through the anti-reflective sapphire crystal.

The dial is not completely minimalist. Three lines of text above the date can make the lower half feel busy, particularly on the darker versions. That is a matter of taste rather than a functional flaw: the broad markers and hands remain easy to read, and the date is useful for an everyday watch.

The crystal is one of the Seastar’s strongest specifications. Sapphire is highly resistant to everyday scratching and is a meaningful upgrade over mineral glass for a watch intended to be worn regularly. The bezel insert, however, is a different story. On the current 40mm reference, Tissot specifies a mineral bezel ring. It may be perfectly functional, but it is less scratch-resistant and less premium in perception than ceramic or sapphire.

T852043012 20mm Lug Black Leather Strap

  • Designed to fit 20 mm lugs

  • Compatible with the following watch collections starting with: T122.407,T063.610,T122.410,T101.410,T101.417,T097.410,T019.430,T108.408,T114.417,T100.417,T927.407,T101.407,T100.430T922.410,T006.414,T117.509T092.427,T121.430
  • This strap is comparable with strap sku T610043024 and T600043012.

That distinction is easy to miss because the earlier 2018 model reviewed by Fratello was described as having a ceramic bezel. The older ceramic description should not be carried over to the current 40mm watch.

Movement: the appeal of 80 hours

The Powermatic 80’s headline feature is its power reserve. Tissot specifies up to 80 hours, which means the watch can be removed on Friday evening and still be running on Monday morning in favorable circumstances. That is more convenient than a typical automatic movement with roughly two days of reserve.

The trade-off is a 21,600-vibrations-per-hour operating rate. The seconds hand does not appear quite as fluid as it would on a traditional 28,800-vph movement. Whether that matters depends on your priorities: the lower beat rate is visible if you look for it, while the longer reserve is useful every time you rotate between watches.

The movement supports automatic and manual winding, displays the date, and is listed with 23 jewels in the published launch specifications. The exhibition caseback lets you see the movement, although the decorative and finishing expectations should remain realistic. This is an efficiently designed, value-focused Swiss movement rather than a haute horlogerie showcase.

Tissot also discusses a Nivachron balance spring, which is intended to improve resistance to magnetic fields compared with a conventional balance spring. That is a component-level manufacturer claim, not a promise that every watch will maintain a particular accuracy in every environment.

How accurate is it?

One hands-on review reported approximately -1 to +5 seconds per day on its sample. That is useful context, but it is still one reviewer’s observed result—not a factory guarantee, a universal tolerance, or a chronometer certification.

The earlier Seastar review specifically noted that its movement was not COSC-certified and did not use a silicon balance spring. Because Tissot has revised the collection and offers movement variants, that information should not automatically be applied to every current reference. Buyers who require certified chronometer performance should look for explicit certification in the documentation for the exact watch.

Bracelet, clasp, and strap options

The stainless-steel bracelet is a three-link, Oyster-style design that suits the case and was described as comfortable in hands-on coverage. Its quick-release system is genuinely useful: you can change from the bracelet to a rubber or other compatible strap without needing a spring-bar tool.

The clasp is where the cost-saving is easiest to notice. The reviewed configuration had three micro-adjustment positions, but no on-the-fly adjustment and no dive extension. That is adequate for ordinary daily wear, yet less convenient if your wrist changes size during the day or you plan to wear the watch over a wetsuit. A ratcheting clasp would make the Seastar feel considerably more premium.

The 40mm case uses a 20mm lug width, but width alone does not prove that every 20mm strap will fit correctly. Tissot’s own strap catalog directs owners to search by watch reference, which is the sensible approach. Before ordering official Tissot-compatible straps or third-party alternatives, confirm the exact reference, end-link shape, clasp connection, and clearance around the case.

The earlier generation was sold on both rubber and steel. One review favored the visual contrast of the rubber configuration while recommending the bracelet version for buyers who wanted more strap flexibility later. That is a personal preference, not a guarantee that one configuration is financially superior.

Is it genuinely suitable for diving?

On paper, the current Seastar has the right core equipment for serious water use: 300m water resistance, a screw-down crown, a screw-down caseback, and an anti-clockwise rotating 60-minute bezel. Tissot says its cases undergo water-resistance, pressure, impact, liquid, gas, and dust checks.

  • This strap is comparable with strap sku T610032786 and T600032781.

That does not mean an individual watch is permanently dive-ready. Water resistance depends on the crown being fully engaged, intact gaskets, correct servicing, and the absence of damage from impacts. A watch with an unknown service history or a crown that has been knocked should be inspected and pressure-tested before being used for diving.

It is more accurate to call the Seastar a 300m dive-style or diving-capable sports watch unless the exact reference’s documentation confirms formal ISO 6425 certification. The available research establishes the water-resistance rating and rotating bezel, but not ISO certification for the current Seastar 1000 Powermatic 80.

What you get for the money

The value proposition is unusually easy to explain:

  • Swiss automatic movement with an 80-hour stated power reserve
  • Sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating
  • 300m water resistance and a screw-down crown
  • Luminous hands and hour markers
  • Exhibition caseback
  • Quick-release bracelet
  • A compact 40mm case that is more wearable than the older model

The counterarguments are equally concrete:

  • The current 40mm bezel ring is mineral, not ceramic or sapphire
  • The clasp has limited micro-adjustment and lacks on-the-fly adjustment and a dive extension in the reviewed configuration
  • The 21,600-vph movement has a less fluid seconds-hand motion than a 28,800-vph alternative
  • Accuracy should not be treated as chronometer-grade without reference-specific certification
  • Specifications, materials, straps, and prices differ across the many Seastar references

Older coverage cited a $750 retail price, while the current U.S. Tissot listing for reference T120.807.11.091.00 showed $875 at the time of research. The current manufacturer listing should take precedence over an older review when assessing present-day value. Before buying a Tissot Seastar 1000 Powermatic 80 40mm, verify the exact reference, current price, included bracelet or strap, warranty, and availability.

Which Seastar 1000 Powermatic 80 should you choose?

Choose this If you want What to know
Current 40mm A restrained, versatile diver for a small-to-medium wrist Approximately 46mm lug-to-lug; current bezel ring is mineral
Older 42–43mm A larger, more forceful wrist presence Approximately 49.6mm lug-to-lug and 13.3mm thick in the cited 2018 model; specifications vary by reference
Bracelet version Maximum flexibility for future strap changes Quick-release system is convenient, but clasp adjustment is basic
Rubber or alternative strap version A more overtly sporty appearance or lighter feel Confirm reference-specific compatibility before buying replacements

Verdict

The 40mm Tissot Seastar 1000 Powermatic 80 is a compelling everyday Swiss diver for buyers who value a long power reserve, sapphire crystal, and 300m water resistance more than a ceramic bezel or premium clasp. Its specifications are substantial enough for real sports-watch use, while its smaller proportions make it more broadly wearable than the older 42–43mm model.

It is not flawless. The mineral bezel ring and basic clasp reveal where Tissot has controlled costs, and the movement’s 21,600-vph rate will not satisfy everyone who wants a smoother seconds hand. But those are specific, understandable compromises rather than evidence of a poorly conceived watch.

Buy the 40mm Seastar if you want serious core specifications in a compact case. Choose the larger generation if wrist presence matters more. In either case, identify the exact reference first—because “Seastar 1000 Powermatic 80” alone is not enough to establish the bezel material, dimensions, bracelet, or current price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Tissot Seastar 1000 Powermatic 80 have a ceramic bezel?

The current 40mm model has a mineral bezel ring, according to Tissot’s published specification. The earlier approximately 42–43mm model reviewed in 2018 was described as having a ceramic bezel. Check the reference before buying.

How long is the Seastar Powermatic 80 power reserve?

The current 40mm model is listed with an 80-hour power reserve. That is the headline benefit of its Powermatic 80 movement, although actual running time can vary with winding and use.

Can you dive with the Tissot Seastar 1000 Powermatic 80?

It is rated to 300m, or 30 bar/1,000ft, and has a screw-down crown. That supports diving use, but the watch should be inspected and pressure-tested after damage or when service history is uncertain. The available research does not establish ISO 6425 certification for the current reference.

What strap size does the 40mm Seastar use?

The current 40mm model uses a 20mm lug width and a quick-release bracelet. Tissot recommends checking compatibility by exact watch reference, since width alone does not guarantee that a replacement strap or bracelet will fit properly.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The current 40mm Tissot Seastar 1000 Powermatic 80 delivers an excellent specification package—sapphire, 300m water resistance, luminous detailing, and an 80-hour reserve—but saves money with a mineral bezel ring and a basic clasp. It is one of the stronger choices for a compact Swiss automatic sports watch, provided you verify the exact reference before purchase.
