The 2015 Edox Hydro-Sub 50th Anniversary Limited Edition is a 46 mm, 500 m dive watch with an unusually shaped case and a sliding crown guard. Robert-Jan Broer’s hands-on review found it distinctive and wearable despite its size; his main reservation was the crown-protecting slide. This is the North Pole edition, not the smaller 2021 Hydro-Sub 1965 LE.

What the 2015 anniversary edition is

Edox presented this limited edition in 2015 to mark the Hydro-Sub associated with 1965. Fratello’s Robert-Jan Broer reported that 515 pieces were made. The North Pole theme refers to Austrian diver Christian Redl and an under-ice freedive. The watch was listed at €1,995 in 2015, according to Broer’s review; that is a historical list price, not a current valuation or an indication of today’s availability. Fratello’s 2015 review

There is a small historical wrinkle: Broer noted that Edox’s historical overview showed a similar Hydro-Sub dated 1963, while this anniversary watch commemorated 1965. His review did not explain the two-year difference, so it remains unresolved.

Case, dial and crown guard

Large, UFO-shaped case

Broer describes the stainless-steel case as UFO-shaped and measures it at 46 mm. He acknowledged that this diameter will not suit everyone, but found the watch wearable. That assessment is personal rather than a guarantee of fit: wrist shape, strap choice and tolerance for a broad case all matter.

Dial and North Pole details

The dial combines black and blue, with a prominent green seconds hand. A closed steel caseback carries an engraved globe and a red marker at the North Pole. Together, those details tie the watch to its under-ice theme without making the dial itself a literal map.

The sliding “Master Lock”

A sliding component on the side of the case covers and protects the screw-down crown. Edox called it the “Master Lock”; Broer regarded the feature as the watch’s main point of distinction, but also his personal reservation. It adds a step when accessing the crown, so buyers who prefer an uncomplicated crown may find this design less appealing.

Dive-watch specifications and movement

Broer reports 500 m water resistance and a unidirectional bezel on the anniversary edition. On his review sample, he found the bezel solid, with no play. Edox’s 2015 catalog lists Hydro-Sub family variants at 50 ATM, with a 46 mm case, 22 mm band and 14 mm thickness. Those are catalog family specifications; the review is the source for the North Pole edition’s reported details. Edox’s 2015 catalog

The watch uses an automatic caliber identified in the review as Edox 80A. Broer said Edox described the movement as based on either an ETA 2824 or a Sellita SW200. That is the explanation reported in the review, not confirmation that every individual watch contains a movement from one specific supplier.

What came in the set

According to Broer, the package included a steel bracelet and a rubber strap, along with push-pins and a tool for changing straps. Having both options gives the owner a choice between a more substantial metal fit and a rubber alternative; the review does not establish how either strap will fit every wrist.

Keep the 2021 Hydro-Sub separate

The later Hydro-Sub 1965 LE is a different watch, not a specification update to this 2015 anniversary edition. Fratello described the 2021 model as 42 mm and water-resistant to 300 m, with a COSC-certified Edox caliber 806 based on the Sellita SW200, in a 500-piece edition. Fratello’s 2021 hands-on

A separate 2021 review by Dive into Watches also gives the later reference a 42 mm case and 300 m rating, and describes a sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel insert and caliber 80 / Sellita SW200-1 with a 38-hour power reserve. Its CHF 1,790 figure is a price reported in 2021, not a current quote. Dive into Watches’ 2021 review

Who might appreciate the 2015 edition

  • Consider it if: you want a large, high-water-resistance dive watch with an unconventional case, a protected crown and a two-strap package.
  • Think carefully if: 46 mm feels oversized on your wrist or you want quick, simple crown access without operating a separate guard.
  • Verify before buying: current production, stock, servicing, resale value and seller listings were not established by the review. Because this is a limited edition, confirm the watch’s condition and the presence of its bracelet, rubber strap and tools with any seller.
