The Seiko Prospex Digi Tuna SBEP005 pairs a digital display and solar-powered functions with a large, shrouded case inspired by Seiko’s Tuna design language. It is not an analog Tuna—or, as Fratello’s Michael Stockton puts it, a “true Tuna”—but a distinctive digital sport watch with a rotating bezel, 200 m water resistance and a black-and-gold look. Stockton found it light and comfortable to wear, while noting that its brief tap-activated illumination and the feel of its shroud are potential drawbacks.
What is the Seiko Digi Tuna SBEP005?
The SBEP005 is the black-and-gold member of Seiko’s Prospex SBEP digital-watch range. Its “Digi Tuna” nickname refers to the combination of a digital display and a protective, Tuna-inspired shrouded case. That resemblance is a design cue, not a claim that it is an analog Tuna: Stockton explicitly describes it as “isn’t a true Tuna” in his August 2, 2018 Fratello hands-on account.
In Worn & Wound’s May 2018 launch coverage, the SBEP001, SBEP003 and SBEP005 are identified as standard versions, while the SBEP007 and SBEP009 are described as retailer-specific limited editions. The article credits the range’s design to Yuki Kajiwara, creative director of Japanese design firm LOWERCASE. The SBEP005’s distinguishing detail is its gold pushers against a dark case and display.
Specifications and functions reported in 2018
| Feature | SBEP005 details |
|---|---|
| Movement | Solar-powered Seiko caliber S802, as reported by Fratello and Worn & Wound in 2018. |
| Case size | Worn & Wound reports 49.5 mm diameter and 14 mm thickness; Fratello describes it as nearly 50 mm across and 14.1 mm thick. |
| Water resistance | 200 m, reported by both 2018 articles. |
| Power reserve | Fratello reports five months of operation on a full charge and up to 20 months in power-reserve mode. These are the durations reported in that 2018 article. |
| Strap | Fratello reports a 22 mm silicone strap and spring-bar tool holes intended to make strap changes easier. The width alone does not establish that every 22 mm replacement strap will fit properly. |
| Bezel | Bidirectional rotating bezel with an outer minute track for elapsed-time tracking, as described in the 2018 coverage. |
| Digital functions | Alarm, world time for 44 cities, two displayed or programmed time zones, stopwatch/chronograph and timer, as reported by Fratello and Worn & Wound. |
The sources do not agree on the case-protection materials: Fratello describes a plastic shroud and bezel/mid-case appearance, while Worn & Wound describes an outer double case and reports a titanium protector. Without a verified official specification for this model, the material should be treated as unresolved rather than inferred from either description.

How it wears: light, large and deliberately unconventional
Stockton says he bought and wore the SBEP005, describing it as light on his wrist and its silicone strap as comfortable and pliable. He wore it on a hot-weather run and around a pool and beach setting, and found its design fun and unusual. Those are his personal impressions, not a controlled test or a universal fit assessment.
The case dimensions are substantial: the 2018 reports put it at about 50 mm across and roughly 14 mm thick. That broad footprint is part of the watch’s visual character, but it may be the main practical obstacle for someone who wants a compact watch or has a smaller wrist. The listed 22 mm strap width is useful when considering replacements, but it is not proof that any strap of that width will clear the case or sit correctly.

Display and everyday usability
The SBEP005’s digital layout gives it an at-a-glance sport-watch character, backed by a broad function set rather than the time-only simplicity of many analog dive-style watches. Its bezel offers a separate way to track elapsed time, while the digital functions cover alarms, a stopwatch, a timer and world time.
Its illumination is a more meaningful compromise. Fratello reports that the display is not continuously backlit and that tapping the watch activates light for about a second. Worn & Wound also describes tap-activated backlighting. Stockton found the short lighting period less dependable in low-light situations; readers who often check a watch in darkness should weigh that limitation against the functions and styling.

How it differs from analog Tunas and SBEP siblings
Compared with an analog Seiko Tuna
The SBEP005 borrows the visual idea of a protected, shrouded round case, but its digital screen and multi-function interface make it a different kind of watch. Calling it a Digi Tuna captures that mix of digital display and Tuna-inspired styling; it should not be mistaken for an analog Tuna model.
Compared with other SBEP versions
The 2018 launch coverage places the SBEP001, SBEP003 and SBEP005 among the standard versions, with the SBEP007 and SBEP009 identified as retailer-specific limited editions. The SBEP005 is specifically the black-and-gold option, with gold pushers. The cited coverage does not establish a detailed feature or material comparison among every variant, so the family labels alone should not be read as proof of identical specifications beyond what those reports document.

Compared with digital sport watches such as G-Shock
Fratello and Worn & Wound draw category-level parallels with G-Shock through traits such as solar power, chronograph and world-time functions, rugged styling and a reported 200 m water-resistance rating. That resemblance does not establish that the SBEP005 is more or less durable than any G-Shock: neither article provides a controlled durability comparison.

Worn & Wound reported a launch-era price of ¥30,000 for the SBEP005 and some other variants in May 2018; Fratello also reported ¥30,000 in August 2018. This is historical launch pricing, not a current retail price or resale estimate. Fratello described the model as Japan-market-only at the time. The cited coverage does not establish present-day stock, regional availability, seller authenticity or condition.
