The IWC Ingenieur reference 3239 is a discontinued stainless-steel automatic watch offered in black-dial IW323902 and silver-dial IW323906 versions. IWC’s past-collection listings specify a 39 mm case, while a 2015 hands-on review rounds it to 40 mm. The manufacturer’s specifications establish what the watch was designed to offer; Robert-Jan Broer’s dated review adds impressions of its finishing, dial and bracelet.
Which watches are the Ingenieur 3239 variants?
IWC’s past-collection pages list two stainless-steel Ingenieur Automatic versions, both supplied with a stainless-steel bracelet:

These are the dimensions published by IWC on its IW323902 page and IW323906 page. Broer called the watch 40 mm in his review, published December 18, 2015; that is his rounded description, not the diameter listed in IWC’s specifications.
What does IWC specify?
IWC lists an automatic, self-winding caliber 30110 movement with a 42-hour power reserve. Published functions and construction details for both variants include:

What is the movement, according to the two sources?
IWC names the movement as caliber 30110. In contrast, Broer’s 2015 review describes it as Sellita SW200-based. The sources do not explain the difference in terminology or establish that the descriptions are interchangeable, so the discrepancy should be left unresolved rather than treated as a technical equivalence.

How does the 3239 look and wear, according to the hands-on review?
Broer’s review draws on his experience with the 3239 and his earlier ownership of the related 3227-01. He praises the mix of satin-brushed surfaces and polished facets on the case and bracelet, the integrated-bracelet design, and a restrained dial with stepped detailing. Those are his visual judgments, not an assurance that every wearer will have the same impression.
On the bracelet, he describes link adjustment using a push-button-and-pin arrangement, along with half-links, as straightforward. He also notes the absence of micro-adjustment and warns that brushed surfaces can scratch. The review’s overall verdict is favorable toward the watch’s Genta-influenced design, proportions and finishing. His reservations include the crown guards’ departure from earlier designs, the bracelet’s lack of micro-adjustment, and a value-for-money concern tied to the movement and the price discussed in 2015. That historical opinion does not establish present-day value.

What is the Ingenieur’s design history?
IWC says Gérald Genta created the Ingenieur SL in the 1970s and reports that 598 pieces were produced and sold between 1976 and 1983. That figure applies to the Ingenieur SL described in IWC’s collection history; it should not be read as a production total for reference 3239. IWC’s page is undated and was retrieved in 2026.

What should a buyer check on a used 3239?
The manufacturer pages are past-collection listings, and Broer’s review dates to 2015. Neither establishes current availability, asking prices, resale value, service costs, or the condition or authenticity of any particular watch. For an individual listing, compare the evidence available for that watch rather than treating the published specifications or historical review as a market appraisal.
