The Rolex Explorer II 226570 is a 42 mm sports watch for people who want a highly legible second-time-zone display and are comfortable with a large wrist presence. Its orange 24-hour hand reads against a fixed graduated bezel, while an independently rapid-setting hour hand lets you adjust local time. Rolex specifies calibre 3285 and approximately 70 hours of power reserve; the fixed bezel means it does not offer the rotating-bezel third-zone calculations of some GMT watches.
The 226570 retains the familiar Explorer II design while refining its proportions and updating its movement from the prior 216570. The white “Polar” and black versions share the same core specifications, so the dial choice comes down to appearance and personal contrast preference.
What the Rolex Explorer II 226570 is
Reference 226570 is the 42 mm Oyster Perpetual Explorer II in Oystersteel. Rolex offers black and white dial versions. Both use a fixed 24-hour graduated bezel and an additional orange hand that completes one revolution every 24 hours.
Rolex describes the orange hand as a way to distinguish day from night and track a second time zone. The independently rapid-setting local-hour hand can be adjusted while the other time-zone reference remains in place. Because the bezel is fixed, the watch provides a second-zone reading but cannot use a rotating bezel to calculate a third zone.

How the 24-hour display works
The orange hand completes a full revolution in 24 hours and points to the fixed bezel’s 24-hour graduations. The wearer can read a second time zone against that scale, while the ordinary hour hand shows local time. The display can also help distinguish daytime from nighttime in environments where ambient light gives little indication.
When traveling, the local-hour hand can be set independently without losing the other time-zone reference. Unlike a rotating-bezel GMT watch, the Explorer II bezel does not turn to calculate another offset. That is a functional distinction, not a defect: the Explorer II prioritizes its fixed 24-hour display.
How the 226570 wears
Hodinkee’s 2022 hands-on article reports a 12.5 mm thickness and describes the watch as relatively thin for its width and stable on the wrist. Those are the publication’s handling impressions, not a universal fit judgment. Hodinkee considers it best suited to medium-to-large wrists; wrist shape and personal preference also matter, so trying it on is worthwhile where possible.

The 42 mm case makes the watch visually prominent. The fixed steel bezel and orange hand give it a utilitarian look, while the bracelet and case proportions remain recognizably close to the previous generation. Buyers who prefer compact watches should consider how the width and overall presence feel on their own wrist.
Choosing the black or white dial
Rolex offers both black and white dials. The white “Polar” version has a high-contrast appearance; the black version gives the watch a darker, more uniform look. The research supports both as available configurations but does not include controlled legibility testing, so neither should be presented as objectively easier to read in every condition. If possible, compare both on the wrist and choose by appearance and personal contrast preference.
226570 versus 216570
The 226570 is an evolution of the 216570, not a fundamentally different-looking watch. Hodinkee describes the visual update as subtle and reports that the newer calibre 3285 has approximately 70 hours of reserve, compared with 48 hours for calibre 3187 in the 216570.
| Comparison | 226570 | 216570 |
|---|---|---|
| Case diameter | 42 mm | 42 mm |
| Movement | Calibre 3285 | Calibre 3187 |
| Reported power reserve | Approximately 70 hours | 48 hours |
| Design | Subtle case and bracelet proportion revisions | Earlier 42 mm Explorer II design |
The reserve and proportion changes are useful comparison points, but they do not make the newer reference an automatic upgrade for every owner. The case size and core display remain familiar; whether the newer movement and refinements matter depends on the buyer.

Who should consider it?
- Consider the 226570 if you want a 42 mm watch with a date, a fixed-bezel 24-hour display, and an independently adjustable local-hour hand.
- Compare the white and black dials in person if possible; choose based on your own contrast and design preferences.
- Consider a rotating-bezel GMT instead if you specifically want to rotate the bezel to calculate another time-zone offset.
- Try it on before buying if you are unsure about a 42 mm case; published wrist impressions cannot predict fit for every wrist.
