What makes the 856 S “blacked out”
The 856 S starts with a bead-blasted stainless-steel case that Sinn hardens with its Tegiment treatment and finishes with DLC. Sinn’s Taiwan listing describes the process as TEGIMENT treatment with a black hard coating. The result is a muted, technical look rather than a polished, reflective one. The sources describe the surface as scratch resistant, not scratch-proof: they do not promise immunity from coating or surface damage.

The black case and dark dial give the watch its stealthy appearance, while the cockpit-inspired layout is intended to keep the information easy to read. That contrast is central to the design: the subdued case does not mean the dial is meant to disappear. Van Straaten’s review asks whether the watch works beyond its technical features and concludes, in his own words, “Specs matter far less than we tend to think.” That is the reviewer’s opinion, not a manufacturer claim.

Keep the 856 S and 856 S UTC variants separate
The 856 S reviewed by Fratello has a date and a listed SW300-1 movement. The Taiwan distributor’s 856 S UTC and Sinn Depot’s 856.S listings describe UTC versions: they add a 24-hour second-time-zone hand and list the Sellita SW330-1 instead. Sinn Depot gives that UTC variant a 42-hour power reserve. Do not transfer the review’s 56-hour reserve to the UTC model, or treat the UTC movement as the specification of the reviewed watch.

Choose the black finish for its appearance, not an assumption of invulnerability
The black coating gives the watch a distinctive, low-reflection look compared with the standard steel 856. The cited descriptions support calling the treated surface scratch resistant, but not scratch-proof. A buyer who wants an uncoated steel appearance should compare the regular 856 rather than assume the S is simply a different dial option.

The UTC listings add a 24-hour second-time-zone hand, which is the practical distinction for someone who regularly tracks another time zone. The reviewed 856 S does not have that hand in its published specification. Check the exact reference before ordering so the movement and functions match the intended configuration.
Check bracelet or strap compatibility by reference
The reviewed bracelet is 20 mm wide, a useful starting measurement for accessory research, but width alone does not establish that every third-party strap will fit the case or clasp. Confirm the exact reference, attachment style, end links, and clasp fit before buying an alternative.
Price and availability depend on market and date
Fratello reported €2,520 for the bracelet-equipped 856 S and a €1,910 starting price for the regular 856 when its article was published on June 29, 2023. Those are historical figures, not current quotes. Regional UTC listings also differ: the Taiwan distributor marks its 856 S UTC as preorder and gives a local starting price, while Sinn Depot lists a Japan-specific price and an approximate two-to-three-month home-order lead time. These listings are not global availability statements; check the seller serving your market for current price, stock, and delivery terms.
