Hands-On: The Earthen Co. Summit MK II Makes a Strong Case for Affordable Ceramic Design

The Summit MK II makes ceramic central to its appeal, pairing color and contrasting case finishes with compact proportions and a useful everyday specification set.

The Earthen Co. Summit MK II’s best argument is its ceramic case: color and contrasting satin and polished surfaces give a compact field-watch silhouette more visual character than the usual utilitarian treatment. At $899, it pairs that design with a 38 mm case, a Miyota automatic movement and 100 m water resistance. That is a persuasive combination, though the verdict is about a considered design and specification set—not a universal claim that it is the best ceramic watch for the money.

What makes the Summit’s ceramic case work

The Summit began in 2025 as a trio of ceramic-cased, field- and pilot-inspired watches. The MK II keeps the original collection’s 38 mm format and broadens its color direction, with variants including Dune Devil, Glade and Après-Bleu. The point is not simply to make a conventional watch in a different material: the ceramic gives the familiar tool-watch outline a more distinctive surface and palette.

Fratello’s 2026 coverage describes the MK II’s mix of satin or brushed planes and polished chamfers as a way to avoid a plasticky appearance. That is a reviewer’s visual assessment, not a measured material test. Hodinkee’s hands-on review of the original Summit likewise praised its case and overall feel. These observations support the design case, but they should not be confused with independent testing of the MK II.

In Hodinkee’s coverage, co-founder Johnathan Chan described the evolution as “the first time we bring more colour into the collection,” and cited updated dial pad printing, straps, contrasting case finishing, crystal anti-reflective coating and crowns. The colorful ceramic and the shifts between matte and polished surfaces are the features that make the watch feel designed rather than merely specified.

Fratello’s 2026 article gives further movement details for the MK II: 24 jewels, a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and a stated accuracy of -10/+30 seconds per day. Treat that accuracy figure as the manufacturer’s stated specification reported by the publication, not as a result measured in a review. Fratello also describes a screw-down crown and two quick-release FKM rubber straps for newly introduced variants. The official Après-Bleu listing instead calls its two included straps woven, so those descriptions should not be generalized across every colorway.

Is $899 a good value?

The Summit MK II’s value is in the combination: a compact ceramic case with distinctive finishing and color, sapphire crystal, a named automatic movement, 100 m water resistance and two straps on the Après-Bleu listing. Hodinkee’s 2025 hands-on, covering the original collection at its $899 launch price, called the ceramic case, large steel crown, dial and sailcloth strap a source of premium feel for a sub-$1,000 watch. That is the reviewer’s impression of the original model, not a controlled comparison or a claim that every MK II variant has the same strap.

Monochrome’s 2026 category coverage places the Summit MK II among ceramic watches that can cost substantially more. That provides price context, not proof that more expensive watches are direct equivalents or that the Summit is a universal bargain. Buyers should compare actual case dimensions and finishing, movement specifications and service expectations, water resistance, legibility, included straps, warranty and returns, and the delivered cost—not case material alone.

Ceramic’s scratch resistance is a manufacturer claim, not an independently established durability result here. The design and published specifications make a positive case for the Summit; they do not establish how it will hold up under every kind of impact or use.

Fit, straps and availability

The 38 mm diameter, 45 mm lug-to-lug and 10 mm listed thickness make the Après-Bleu a relatively compact proposition on paper. The 20 mm lug width also leaves room to use other compatible straps if desired, but the two included woven straps mean an extra strap is optional, not a prerequisite. Check the attachment style for the specific variant before buying a replacement; Fratello’s quick-release FKM description applies to the newly introduced variants it discusses, not necessarily the woven straps listed for Après-Bleu.

Availability differs by color and can change. When checked in 2026, the official Après-Bleu page showed “Sold Out – Notify Me When It’s Available,” while the brand homepage marked Summit MK II Dawn Til Dusk, Blue Bird and Whiteout at $899 and in stock. Those are point-in-time listings, not a guarantee of present stock. Earthen Co. says U.S. taxes and duties are calculated at checkout and that international buyers may owe duties on delivery, so the final cost can exceed the listed price.

Verdict

The Summit MK II earns its appeal by making ceramic the design rather than a checkbox: its color options and contrasting case surfaces give a compact, recognizable field-watch shape its own character. The $899 listing is backed by a useful everyday specification set, especially the 100 m water resistance, sapphire crystal and 42-hour stated reserve on the Après-Bleu page. It is a credible affordable-ceramic choice for someone who values that case treatment and proportions; the remaining decision is whether a particular color is available and suits the buyer’s priorities.
