The Forstner 5-Row Beads of Rice is a fixed-width steel bracelet designed to pair a distinctive five-row vintage-inspired pattern with modern watches. Independent reviewer Michael Stockton found it comfortable and well finished on the watches he tried, though its broad clasp and long folding section may not suit every wrist. The key fit check is simple: match your watch’s lug gap to the bracelet’s fixed end-piece width, then account for the fact that the bracelet remains 18mm wide through its center section.
What the bracelet is—and how it looks
Forstner describes the bracelet as a modern recreation of a rare five-row Gay Frères style. Its pattern alternates short, narrow polished beads with longer, thicker brushed center links. The result is busier than a conventional three-link Oyster-style bracelet, while the contrasting finishes give the rows definition.
Forstner dates the original design to the mid-twentieth century. Fratello’s Michael Stockton describes Gay Frères examples from the 1940s through the 1960s, and characterizes the design as a mix of rice-like beads and smaller Oyster-like links with open spaces. That history gives the modern bracelet its vintage cue, but the Forstner is a contemporary reproduction rather than an original period bracelet. Forstner product page · Fratello review
Fit: measure the lugs, not just the watch
The bracelet’s fixed end piece is offered in five widths, while the center portion is 18mm wide in every size. Choose the end-piece width to match the watch’s lug gap; do not assume the center measurement is the lug size. Because the end piece is not removable, a mismatch cannot be corrected by changing links. Also confirm that the watch takes standard spring-bar attachment.

Stockton’s July 8, 2024 Fratello review is based on trying 18mm and 19mm versions with vintage watches and a modern Aquastar with a 19mm lug gap. He reports that the ends are straight and that the bracelet does not taper toward the clasp. Those are observations from his examples, not a guarantee that the bracelet will sit flush on every case or feel balanced on every wrist. Read Stockton’s independent review.
Comfort and clasp feel
Stockton reports that the links articulate through 180 degrees, helping the bracelet conform around the wrist. He praised the finish and described the edges as smooth. His overall assessment was: “Small niggles aside, the Forstner 5-Row Beads of Rice is overwhelmingly comfortable and looks great!” This is a hands-on impression from his review, not a universal fit claim.

The practical caveat he identifies is the clasp’s size: its wide body and long folding section could extend to the edge of his wrist. That may matter particularly for people with smaller wrists or limited flat space on the underside of the wrist. Forstner states that the pressure clasp has micro-adjustment, which lets the wearer make a small fit change without removing a link. The clasp’s polished-and-brushed visual contrast complements the bracelet, but its footprint is worth considering alongside the stated wrist range.
How to install and size it
Forstner includes spring bars and a screwdriver. Its instructions describe installation and link removal as follows; use care around the watch case and bracelet to avoid scratches.

Forstner’s place in bracelet history
Forstner’s company history says the Forstner Chain Corporation was founded around 1920 in New Jersey by William Forstner. The company account discusses its Komfit and Bonklip designs and says its successor, Jacoby-Bender, supplied original-equipment bracelets for brands including Longines, whose watches used Beads of Rice bracelets. This is useful background from the manufacturer, rather than independently verified history. Forstner’s history page.
